Job summary

WSP Canada is seeking a Senior Substation Engineer to lead HV substations design for utility and renewable projects across Canada. You will develop detailed designs, layouts, and protection concepts while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

Ideal candidates have 10–15 years in substation design, P.Eng. eligibility in Canada, and strong client communication. Occasional travel to client sites is expected. Flexible work options are available within our national teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and eligibility for P.Eng. in Canada.
• 10–15 years' experience in substation design within utility/consulting environments.
• Experience on brownfield and greenfield substations, 500 kV asset is a plus.
• Knowledge of IEEE/ANSI standards and IEC 61850 is an asset.
• Strong written, problem-solving and client-facing communication.

Responsibilities

• Perform detailed design of medium- and high-voltage substations per industry standards.
• Develop One-line diagrams, general arrangements, and grounding layouts.
• Carry out engineering calculations including sizing and protection concepts.
• Prepare protection philosophies, schematics, wiring and panel layouts.
• Support technical documentation, specifications, and construction packages.
• Collaborate with clients, utilities, and equipment suppliers to deliver solutions.
• Provide technical support during procurement, construction, testing and commissioning.
• Contribute to multidisciplinary teams on renewable energy and utility projects.

As a Senior Substation Engineer , you'll play a key role in delivering Substation design solutions for high-voltage utility and renewable energy projects across Canada. Working alongside multidisciplinary teams, you’ll contribute to projects from concept through commissioning while helping clients solve complex power system challenges.

Your Impact

• Perform detailed design of medium- and high-voltage utility substations as an experienced senior engineer in accordance with applicable industry standards, including IEEE and ANSI standards.
• Develop one-line diagrams, general arrangements, elevation views, conduit and cable routing plans, substation physical layouts, grounding layouts, and equipment details.
• Perform engineering calculations, including lightning protection, battery sizing, AC station service sizing, cable ampacities and conduit and cable tray sizing.
• Develop protection and control designs for transmission and distribution substations.
• Prepare protection philosophies, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, and panel layouts.
• Support the development of design basis documents, technical specifications, engineering calculations, reports, and construction packages.
• Collaborate with clients, utilities, equipment suppliers, and project stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions.
• Provide technical support during procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning.
• Participate in multidisciplinary project teams delivering renewable energy, utility, and industrial power projects.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives and share technical knowledge across the team.

The Skills That Set You Apart

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration in Canada.
• At least 10 to 15 years' experience in substation design engineering within utility, consulting, or industrial environments.
• Demonstrated experience serving as a substation design engineer on multiple concurrent brownfield and greenfield projects.
• Working knowledge of transmission and distribution protection philosophies and industry standards.
• Experience in substation design at 500 kV voltage level is considered an asset.
• Knowledge of IEC 61850 communication protocols and digital substations is considered an asset.
• Strong technical writing, problem-solving, and client-facing communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced project environment.
• Willingness to travel occasionally to client facilities, substations, or project sites

Compensation:

AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $60.20 – $79.80

MB & ON: $54.90 – $75.70

NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $54.40 – $72.20
