As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will play a key role in the delivery of the City’s bridge and transportation structures. The Bridges and Geotechnics Division performs project management activities for new bridges and transportation structures and for rehabilitation of existing bridges and transportation structures, while also providing bridge and transportation structure engineering technical subject matter expertise to a wide variety of interested parties. Primary duties include:

  • Manage projects throughout all stages to ensure the procurement, design, construction, and close‑out phases are delivered on schedule, on budget, and to a high quality standard in alignment with the project's business case and charter.
  • Develop and sustain strategic and working relationships with internal and external customers, community and business organizations, and partners to facilitate excellence in service delivery.
  • Provide technical expertise and quality assurance decisions for City projects including bridges, bridge‑sized culverts, tunnels, interchanges, Light Rail Transit (LRT) infrastructure, retaining walls, noise walls, sign structures, and other transportation structures.
  • Provide advice on technical decisions, guide design and construction phases, and review structural design circulations.
  • Complete select structural engineering designs, load ratings, inspections, and evaluations internally.
  • Develop and help to maintain Design Guidelines, construction specifications, and standard details.
  • Research new bridge engineering materials, products, and processes for acceptance / prequalification.
  • Review and take engineering responsibility for bridge and transportation structure inspections done by City technicians.
  • Assist City asset management team and also internal bridge construction crew on a regular basis with technical expertise.
  • Be on The City's bridge emergency response call‑out list rotationally but regularly, including after‑hours (an additional stipend is provided to employees for this work).

Qualifications

  • A degree in Civil Engineering or a related Engineering field.
  • You must have at least 8 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. Designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work.
  • Experience in the design and construction administration / resident engineering of bridges and other transportation structures is required.
  • A master's in structural engineering will be considered an asset.
  • Applied knowledge of project management in either a government or consulting environment will be considered an asset.
  • Experience in bridge and transportation structure inspections and/or asset management will be considered an asset.
  • Experience working and negotiating with developers and interest groups and presenting to legislative and political bodies is considered an asset.
  • Success in this position requires sensitivity to corporate and business unit goals and priorities, along with the ability to provide technical and professional advice to both internal and external contacts at the expert level, using professional judgement and practical expertise.
  • The successful candidate will possess well‑developed communication skills, the ability to work both independently and in a team environment, and a high standard of thoroughness, accuracy, and attention to detail.
