Job summary

Fluor Canada is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to lead design efforts on major projects in Vancouver. You will develop and review estimates, schedules, and forecasts while ensuring compliance with NBCC/BCBC and other standards.

This role involves mentoring teams, hands-on analysis, and collaboration with clients and vendors. We expect a accredited engineering degree and 10 years of heavy industrial/mining project experience, with strong software proficiency and professional registration

Qualifications

  • Accredited four-year degree in engineering and ten years of structural design experience.
  • Strong knowledge of NBCC/BCBC, IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI, CSA A23.3 and CSA S16.
  • Experience in dynamic analysis and design of structures supporting rotating equipment.
  • Professional registration and membership in technical society preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and review estimates and schedules, progress reports and workforce forecasts.
  • Establish, track, and monitor material quantities; provide analysis and forecasts.
  • Develop and review specifications and design criteria.
  • Participate in procurement, permitting, and subcontracting activities.
  • Perform calculations and recommend solutions for complex engineering problems.

Job Description
  • Develop and review estimates and schedules, progress reports, including workforce forecasts
  • Establish, track, and monitor material key quantities; provide analysis and forecasts
  • Develop and review specifications, including design criteria
  • Participate in activities associated with equipment and material procurement, permitting, and subcontracting
  • Perform and check calculations, specify equipment, and solve problems of complex to difficult engineering complexity
  • Participate in people development through mentoring, development of training material, conducting training seminars, and performance appraisal input and counseling
  • Analyze and make independent recommendations regarding solutions to problems with varying complexity in accordance with organization and/or project objectives and guidelines
  • Other duties as assigned
Basic Job Requirements
  • Accredited four (4) year degree or global equivalent in engineering field of study and ten (10) years years of structural design experience in heavy industrial and mining projects; a recognized professional certification or registration in the applicable field, if required; some locations may have additional or different qualifications in order to comply with local requirements
  • Strong working knowledge of NBCC/BCBC, IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI, CSA A23.3, and CSA S16.
  • Experience in the dynamic analysis and design of structures supporting rotating equipment.
  • Proficiency with RISA-3D, SAP2000, Dyna5, or equivalent structural and dynamic analysis software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with audiences that include but are not limited to management, coworkers, clients, vendors, contractors, and visitors
  • Job related technical knowledge necessary to complete the job
  • Ability to learn and apply knowledge of applicable local, state/province, and federal/national statutes and guidelines
  • Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner
  • Professional registration and membership in technical society (preferred)
  • Advanced knowledge of discipline codes and standards, commercial availability and cost of materials
  • Effort-hour estimating and staff forecasting
  • Managing and leading a large project
  • Project set-up, developing control-level schedules, progress reporting and project close-out
  • Practical field experience
  • Intermediate computer and software skills to include the use of word processing, e-mail, spreadsheet and electronic presentation programs
Other Job Requirements
  • Perform calculations for foundations, concrete, and steel structures by hand and computer analysis
  • Advanced knowledge of:
    • Performing hand and computer calculations for foundations, concrete, and steel structures
    • Analyzing complex structures o Wind and seismic loading in structural calculations
    • Dynamic analysis and design (structural) o Computer modeling and analysis
    • Procurement and construction aspects of engineering o Vendor drawing review, intergroup review – squad checking o Engineering and fabricator drawing checking o Managing and leading a small project
  • Intermediate knowledge of:
    • Blast design
    • Managing and leading a medium/large project

Salary is based upon experience. Salary Range: $118,000.00 - $218,000.00

The market rate for the role is typically at the mid-point of the salary range; however, variations in final salary are determined by additional factors such as the candidate’s qualifications, relevant years of experience, geographic location, internal pay equity, and prevailing market conditions for the specific role.
