Job summary

The Senior Specialist, News & Editorial plays an important role on the Content and Creative Services team, providing subject matter expertise on member news and editorial communications.

The role contributes to the planning, writing, editing and publishing of member news and editorial communications. The Senior Specialist, News & Editorial has a deep understanding of member news and editorial best practices (including style, search, and accessibility) and contributes to the quality of content on OMA channels, including OMA.org, OMA News and the OMA mobile app.

The Senior Specialist, News & Editorial works closely with the Digital Content team and a diverse range of internal stakeholders to strategize and deliver member‑centric, accessible content that aligns with the OMA’s strategic priorities.

How you will make a difference

Provide subject matter expertise in the planning and publishing of OMA member news and editorial communications. Duties include:

  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders and ACM team members on member news and editorial opportunities (including accessibility, best practices, accuracy, timeliness, member experience, brand style and tone) while also ensuring the timely publication of content
  • Participating in the development and dissemination of weekly OMA member email (weekly OMA News and ad hoc member alerts) via editing, email development and testing
  • Writing, copy editing and proofreading content for digital, print and video (including storyboarding), following best practices for writing, CP style, accessibility and SEO
  • Assisting in video planning and production as needed, including providing editorial feedback during the production cycle
  • Participating in long‑term projects from inception to execution, working in collaboration with internal stakeholders and managing project‑related timelines
  • Contributing to the member news and editorial communications calendar
  • Supporting the immediate team with content and process development
  • Leveraging analytics to drive continuous improvement and to inform content development
  • Proactively identifying new opportunities and strategies to modernise member news and editorial communications
  • Providing support to the Internal Communications team for weekly staff email, as needed

Contribute to the effective functioning of the News & Editorial team by:

  • Working within department processes for managing content requests, development and delivery
  • Building and maintaining effective, collaborative working relationships with internal stakeholders
  • Establishing and maintaining professional relationships with a roster of vendors to ensure the timely execution of creative projects
  • Contributing ideas and feedback to the team to continuously evolve and improve content delivery and standards

Champions standards for OMA digital content to ACM team and other internal stakeholders, including:

  • Best practice principles of user centricity, accessibility and SEO
  • News and editorial team processes and requirements
  • Adhering to style guides for grammar and brand guidelines
Requirements that are important to us
  • College or university degree or college diploma in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Digital Media or related field
  • Four to five years of relevant experience
  • Experience in writing and editing to deliver high‑quality experiences
  • Experience in editorial content strategy and design
  • Expertise in synthesising complex information and communicating it in a way that is clear and easy to understand
  • Has a keen eye for detail and is highly creative
  • Familiarity with CP style
  • Ability to formulate story ideas and create impactful multimedia content that can be showcased on various platforms, including print long‑form articles, breaking news, web copy, podcasts and videos
  • Confidence in pitching sources and securing impactful interviews
  • Must have superior skills in script writing, concept development, source outreach, interviewing, editing, research and organisation skills to manage process end‑to‑end
  • Familiarity with government and health‑care sector would be an asset

The OMA has moved to a permanent hybrid work environment. As such, the individual in this position will be required to work a minimum number of days in our Toronto office.
