Job summary

BMO Financial Group seeks a Sr. Specialist in Model Governance to oversee enterprise-wide model risk, ensure compliance, and drive governance improvements across data, workflows and reporting.

You will partner with technology and business teams to implement governance standards, manage model inventory, and support regulatory audits with evidence and dashboards.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in risk management, finance, economics, statistics, mathematics, computer science, business, engineering, data analytics, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of relevant experience in model risk management, governance, oversight, validation governance, regulatory risk management, or related control function.
  • Deep knowledge of model life cycle, regulatory requirements, and risk policy frameworks.

The Sr. Specialist, Model Governance provides oversight, monitoring and reporting on model risk across the enterprise. This includes developing and monitoring the model risk management program and practices, implementing policies, standards, and controls that increase transparency, accuracy, and consistency across the bank, and working with stakeholders to implement the methodology, metrics, and program standards to ensure compliance, effective monitoring, and timely reporting. Leads the development and maintenance of governance systems and framework. Coordinates the management of databases; ensures alignment and integration of data in adherence with data governance standards. Defines business requirements for the bank’s Model Inventory System, including model lifecycle workflows, inventory data fields, governance checkpoints, reporting requirements, and control expectations. Actively partners with technology teams to ensure the proposed functionality supports effective model lifecycle oversight, monitoring, escalation, and evidence retention. Provides subject matter expertise on how model risk governance requirements should be reflected in system workflows, user roles, metadata, dashboards, and reporting logic. Assess current-state system gaps and recommend enhancements to improve data quality, workflow efficiency, transparency, control effectiveness, and audit readiness. Support prioritization of system enhancements based on risk impact, regulatory relevance, operational urgency, and business value. Acts as a trusted advisor to model owners and developers. Helps determine business priorities and best sequence for execution of business/group strategy. Researches existing or emerging requirements & related best practices to assist and develops recommendations for changes/enhancements. Identifies emerging issues and trends to inform decision-making. Assists in the development of strategic plans. Guides/assists in the identification and classification of issues; recommends action plans. Conducts independent analysis and assessment to resolve strategic issues. Recommends and implements solutions based on analysis of issues and implications for the business. Influences and negotiates to achieve business objectives. Represents the risk program / governance structure during internal/external regulatory audits and/or examinations. May provide specialized support for other internal and external regulatory requirements. Ensures alignment between stakeholders. Builds change management plans of varying scope and type; leads or participates in a variety of change management activities including readiness assessments, planning, stakeholder management, execution, evaluation and sustainment of initiatives. Leads and integrates the monitoring, measurement and reporting on the status of the model risk governance program to internal and external stakeholders. Leads the management of governance meetings and maintenance of governing body mandates, oversight and approval guidelines. Provides input into the planning and implementation of ongoing operational programs in support of the model validation / risk framework. Leads/participates in the design, implementation and management of core business/group processes. Independently administers and evaluates model life cycle activities for adherence to all policies, procedures and established processes; documents and reports results of evaluations on an individual and summary basis. Identifies where corrective actions are required and escalates per guidelines; ensures corrective action is taken. Provides advice and guidance to assigned business/group on implementation of the risk framework, including effective challenge. Coordinates and participates in the execution of oversight/governance activities including reporting; assessment of education and training needs, development/delivery of training; development and execution of regulatory administration processes and procedures. Consults with stakeholders to improve consistency and transparency of risk measurement, metrics, and reporting. Develops and maintains in-depth knowledge of business and related risk management requirements and legislative / regulatory directives and guidance. Analyzes data and information to provide insights and recommendations. Monitors and tracks performance; addresses any issues. Provides specialized consulting, analytical and technical support. Exercises judgment to identify, diagnose, and solve problems within given rules. Works independently and regularly handles non-routine situations. Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 5 to 7 years of relevant experience in model risk management, model governance, risk oversight, validation governance, regulatory risk management, or a related control function. In-depth knowledge and understanding of the model life cycle, model risk management practices. In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements. In-depth knowledge & experience with risk policy frameworks; quality control / testing frameworks. Deep knowledge and technical proficiency gained through extensive education and business experience. Salary:

$70,000.00 - $150,000.00 Pay Type: Salaried The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type. Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position. BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
