Job summary

Sun Life in Canada is seeking a Senior Software Engineer — Full Stack to join the SAFT squad and help modernize Advisor Hub and Suncentral. You will own end-to-end features from refinement through production, writing robust back-end services in Java/Spring and dynamic front-ends in React.

This role requires 5+ years in full-stack development, collaboration in an Agile team, and the ability to balance delivery with compliance.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of progressive full-stack development experience with SDLC and integrations.
• Strong Java / Spring / Spring Boot backend expertise.
• API development using REST, OpenAPI, AJAX, SOAP.
• React with Router, hooks, state management and SPA architecture.
• Strong JavaScript/TypeScript (ES6+) and modern front-end patterns.
• SQL (SQL Server, Oracle) and NoSQL (MongoDB) experience.
• CI/CD with Bitbucket, Jenkins; basic familiarity with C# / ASP.NET is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and ship full-stack features for Suncentral and Advisor Hub.
• Write clean, well-tested code that integrates with back-end services.
• Contribute to technical discussions with the Tech Lead on approaches and trade-offs.
• Modernize legacy components with maintainable solutions.
• Collaborate with Agile team members to estimate work and meet sprint commitments.
• Analyze impact of changes on infrastructure and system behavior.
• Provide code review feedback and support to junior engineers when possible.

Senior Software Engineer — Full Stack

About The Team

You'll be joining the Super-Awesome Fun Time (SAFT) Squad — the engineering team at the heart of Sun Life's IID Advisor & Firm Journey. Our mission: transform the digital experience for Independent Advisors and their firms on Suncentral and Advisor Hub, positioning Sun Life as the carrier of choice.

We gather user feedback, ship new features, and modernize legacy applications using up-to-date technologies — all while maintaining compliance and enabling advisors to deliver lifetime financial security to their clients. We move fast, build with purpose, and have a good time doing it.

What You'll Do

As a Senior Engineer on this team, you'll be a strong individual contributor - someone who takes complex work end-to-end with minimal handholding, writes code the team can build on, and raises the bar through how you work day-to-day:

• Design, build, and ship full-stack features on Suncentral and Advisor Hub — taking stories from refinement through to production with confidence
• Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code that integrates reliably with existing back-end services and front-end surfaces
• Contribute to technical discussions alongside the Tech Lead - sharing your perspective on approach, trade-offs, and implementation options
• Modernize legacy application components by replacing outdated patterns with current, maintainable solutions
• Collaborate with Agile team members (Journey Owner, Scrum Master, Tech Leads) to estimate work, flag risks early, and deliver within sprint commitments
• Apply analytical thinking to understand the downstream impact of your changes on infrastructure and system behaviour
• Occasionally support less experienced team members through code review feedback and informal pairing - as capacity allows
• Participate fully in agile ceremonies and contribute to a high-functioning, continuously improving team

Technical Skills

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

• 5+ years of progressive full-stack development experience, including full SDLC and systems integration
• Strong Java / Spring / Spring Boot — the core of our back-end services
• API development proficiency: REST, OpenAPI, AJAX, SOAP; middleware and web hosting technologies
• Front-end fluency in React and React Router — component lifecycle, hooks, state management, SPA architecture, async rendering, client-side routing
• Strong JavaScript / TypeScript — ES6+ features including async/await, promises, destructuring, modules, arrow functions
• Solid HTML5 and CSS3; responsive design principles
• SQL expertise across relational databases (SQL Server, Oracle) and NoSQL (MongoDB)
• Hands-on with DevOps tooling: BitBucket, CDD, Jenkins
• Familiarity with C# / ASP.net is an asset

Special Requirements

• Occasional travel between Sun Life locations (Toronto, Waterloo) may be required depending on work assignment
• Periodic weekend/after-hours work may be required to support project implementations and system upgrades

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.
