Job summary

Coursera Sourcing in Toronto is seeking a Staff Software Developer on the Monetization team to own service architecture, product API development, and data modeling. You’ll design and iterate at startup speed, collaborating across product and engineering to shape technical decisions and business outcomes.

You’ll build scalable systems using Java, Play, Scala, MySQL, Cassandra, Solr, and Kafka, balancing hands-on work with technical leadership in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

About this Role:

As a Staff Software Developer on the Monetization team, you'll lead technical initiatives and take significant ownership over service architecture, product API development, and data modeling. You'll design and iterate at startup speed, working with modern Java, MySQL, DynamoDB, gRPC, GraphQL, Kafka, and microservices architecture. In this role, you'll balance hands-on development with technical leadership, collaborating across product and engineering to shape both technical decisions and business outcomes.

What you’ll be doing:

Design and implement scalable systems and infrastructures that support Coursera's backend services

Measure your work thoroughly, analyze results, and generate hypotheses to drive new product changes through A/B testing

Qualifications:

7+ years of experience working in a software engineering role

Experience designing highly-scalable and performant microservices and storage layers using languages and infrastructure such as Java, Play, Scala, MySQL, Cassandra, Solr, or Kafka

Experience working in fast-moving team environments with frequent deployments

Background in using data and metrics to inform technical and product decisions

Demonstrated history of building and launching products with understanding of API design, system architecture, and data architecture

This role is only available for hire in Toronto, Canada

Coursera offers competitive pay and fair compensation practices across all regions. Job titles may span multiple career levels, and the targeted hiring base salary range for this role in Canada is CAD $164,000 - $205,000. Actual compensation will depend on factors such as experience, education, transferable skills, business needs, and location. This range may be adjusted over time and may include eligibility for variable pay, equity, and comprehensive benefits.
