Job summary

DCI Group of Companies - Discover Communications is seeking a senior backend engineer to design, develop, and maintain enterprise-grade Java applications in a hybrid Canada-based role. You will build scalable microservices and RESTful APIs with Spring Boot, Kafka, Cassandra, and Kubernetes.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field or equivalent experience.
5+ years of hands-on Java development experience.
Strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, Microservices, REST APIs, and distributed systems.
Experience with Cassandra data modeling, partition keys, querying, TTL management.
Experience with Kubernetes, deployments, services, pods, and Helm charts.
Strong understanding of software design patterns and best practices.
Experience troubleshooting complex multi-service environments with Git-based workflows.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain enterprise-grade backend applications using Java and Spring Boot.
Build and support scalable microservices and RESTful APIs in a distributed architecture.
Design service-to-service communication patterns, error handling, and resilient architectures.
Develop and troubleshoot REST APIs for internal and external integrations.
Work with Kafka-based event-driven architectures and monitor message processing.
Design Cassandra data models and optimize queries for performance and scalability.
Deploy, configure, and support applications in Kubernetes using Helm charts.
Monitor health, analyze logs, and troubleshoot production and non-production issues across services.
Participate in code reviews and uphold coding standards and best practices.
Collaborate with product owners, architects, and teams to deliver high-quality software.

Salary Range: $135,000.00 To $145,000.00 Annually

1 Year Employment Agreement - Hybrid Model

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain enterprise-grade backend applications using Java and Spring Boot.
Build and support scalable microservices and RESTful APIs in a distributed systems architecture.
Design and implement service-to-service communication patterns, error handling mechanisms, and resilient application architectures.
Develop, integrate, and troubleshoot REST APIs for internal and external system integrations.
Work with Kafka-based event-driven architectures, including publishing and consuming events, monitoring message processing, and troubleshooting integration issues.
Design and optimize Cassandra data models, queries, and database structures to ensure high performance and scalability.
Deploy, configure, and support applications running in Kubernetes environments using Helm charts and deployment configurations.
Monitor application health, analyze logs, and troubleshoot production and non-production issues across multiple services and environments.
Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to improve system reliability and performance.
Participate in code reviews and ensure adherence to established coding standards, design principles, and development best practices.
Collaborate with product owners, architects, and development teams to deliver high-quality software solutions.
Manage application configurations and environment-specific deployments across development, testing, and production environments.
Support continuous improvement initiatives related to performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
5+ years of hands-on software development experience using Java.
Strong expertise in:
- Java (Object-Oriented Programming, Collections Framework, Streams, Exception Handling)
- Spring Boot
- Microservices Architecture
- RESTful API Design and Development
- Distributed Systems
- Git-Based Source Control
Experience with Cassandra, including:
- Data Modeling

Strong understanding of software design patterns and development best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Apache Kafka and event-driven architectures.
Experience with Dynatrace or similar application performance monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
Experience supporting cloud-native and containerized applications.
Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments.
