Job description

WHO WE ARE:

Peripheral is developing spatial intelligence, starting in live sports and entertainment. Our models generate spatial data, used for advanced sports analytics and immersive media experiences. We’re solving key research challenges in 3D computer vision, creating the foundations for the next generation of robotic perception and embodied intelligence.

We’re backed by top investors, including Khosla Ventures, Daybreak, and Entrepreneurs First, and working with some of the biggest names in sports. Our team includes engineers and researchers from leading technology companies and research institutions, and we’re building technology at the intersection of AI, graphics, and the future of live entertainment. We’re ambitious and looking to win.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

We're seeking a Senior Robotics Engineer to lead Peripheral's Capture Systems team and architect our entire spatial data capture suite - the sensing infrastructure that everything downstream depends on. You'll report directly to our CTO and manage a team spanning mechatronics, firmware, and software (camera calibration, state estimation, and controls), setting the technical direction and scope for how Peripheral captures the physical world.

This is a role for someone who can go deep on 3D computer vision and sensing architecture while also building and growing the team responsible for shipping it - from component-level hardware decisions through to the algorithms that turn raw sensor data into usable spatial understanding.

WHO YOU ARE:

You've spent your career at the intersection of robotics and 3D perception, equally comfortable reasoning about sensor placement and PCB tradeoffs as you are about SLAM, sensor fusion, or camera calibration math. You've either pushed the boundaries of 3D computer vision in a research setting, or you've shipped production systems that capture and process real-world 3D data at scale, and you know firsthand where research abstractions break down against real hardware.

You're a builder who's also a multiplier: you've led engineers before, and you know how to set technical direction for a team spanning multiple disciplines without needing to be the expert in every one of them. You think in systems, from the physical sensor rig to the software that consumes its output - and you can make the architecture calls that keep that whole stack coherent as it scales.

You're drawn to the opportunity to shape engineering culture from the ground up - setting the technical standards and team norms that Peripheral will scale on.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

  • Architect, scope, and lead the design of Peripheral's entire spatial data capture suite — cameras, LiDARs, and the mechatronics, firmware, and software that support them.

  • Manage and grow the Capture Systems team, mentoring and developing engineers across mechatronics, firmware, and software (camera calibration, state estimation, and controls).

  • Set technical direction and priorities across the team, making architecture-level tradeoffs on sensor selection, hardware design, and the 3D capture pipeline.

  • Partner directly with the CTO and cross-functional leads (mechanical, robotics, downstream ML/perception teams) to translate product and research requirements into a capture system roadmap.

  • Drive the team's approach to 3D reconstruction, sensor fusion, and calibration, ensuring the capture suite produces data that's reliable and usable downstream.

  • Review and unblock technical work across the stack, from PCB and firmware decisions to state estimation and control algorithms.

  • Create and manage camera installation plans at arena- and stadium-scale venues

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.

  • 5+ years of production experience building and shipping 3D data capture systems (multi-camera/LiDAR rigs, calibration pipelines, spatial data infrastructure) at scale.

  • Prior experience leading or managing engineering teams, spanning multiple disciplines (hardware/firmware/software).

  • Strong systems-level understanding of spatial data capture: sensor selection and placement, camera/LiDAR calibration, time synchronization, and state estimation.

  • Familiarity with the full stack this role oversees — mechatronics and sensor hardware, embedded/firmware systems, and the software (calibration, state estimation, controls) that consumes captured data — enough to make informed architecture decisions and unblock any layer.

  • Experience with low-level firmware and electrical challenges, focusing on latency reduction and managing network switch and server infrastructure

  • Excellent technical communication skills — able to translate between hardware, firmware, and software teams and align them around a shared architecture.

  • Candidates must have the legal right to work in Canada and be willing to relocate to Toronto for an in-office role. At this time, we are unable to provide immigration sponsorship.

NICE TO HAVE:

  • Experience with SLAM frameworks, point cloud processing, or 3D reconstruction libraries (e.g., COLMAP, Open3D, PCL).

  • Understands hardware development as a process: design, prototyping, tolerances, fit and alignment, thermal and vibration constraints, material selection, and manufacturing at volume.

  • Background in robotics perception for autonomous systems, motion capture, or similar spatial-data-heavy domains.

  • Experience building or scaling a hardware-adjacent engineering org from an early stage.

  • Publications at top-tier venues (e.g., CVPR, ICRA, ECCV, NeurIPS, etc) or patents in 3D computer vision, SLAM, or related fields.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE WORKING HERE

  • Competitive equity package as an early team member.

  • Annual salary of $200K–$250K CAD plus performance bonuses, commensurate with experience.

  • Unparalleled access to premier global sporting events and iconic venues.

  • Full ownership of high-impact projects shaping the future of spatial intelligence and 3D media.

  • Flexible Paid Time Off (PTO).

  • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and wellness benefits.
