Job description

Type: Full-time

Location: Toronto, ON

Salary: $120,000 - $150,000 CAD Annually

Reports To: Product Design Director

Company Overview

BRL Studio® is the in‑house creative agency for Brodie Rec. League, supporting a rapidly growing sports brand operating across 20+ North American cities and serving more than 50,000 athletes.

Brodie Rec. League is more than a basketball league, it’s a community. As one of North America’s fastest‑growing sports brands, Brodie League is redefining adult recreational basketball by delivering an elevated, professional‑quality experience rooted in culture, competition, and community. Our mission is to make every league night the best night of the week for our athletes.

Role Overview

We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer to own the design of the Brodie app’s engagement and retention layer. You'll design progression systems including XP, levels, badges, archetypes, challenges, rewards, and re‑engagement experiences that keep athletes connected to the league between game nights. This is a high‑impact role with ownership of one of the most important product initiatives on our roadmap and a hard Fall 2026 launch deadline.

You’ll work directly with our Product Design Director, CEO, and app Engineering team in fast product cycles – taking features from problem to wireframe to high‑fidelity prototype to shipped product, then iterating based on real player behaviour. The right person is a systems thinker who designs fast, communicates clearly, and uses modern tools – including AI – to multiply their output.

Core Responsibilities
Gamification, XP & Challenges (Primary Focus)
  • Design the XP economy: points, levels, tiers, and unlockables – including earn rates, decay, season resets, and anti‑gaming protection
  • Design the badge and archetype systems, including art direction with our 3D asset pipeline
  • Design the weekly challenge / quest system: personal quests, weekly goals, city‑vs‑city challenges, streak mechanics, leaderboards, and challenge invites
  • Design reward loops: milestones, partner rewards, and membership & loyalty integration
  • Run a live‑ops design cadence: weekly challenge refreshes, seasonal events, limited‑time drops
  • Work our LiveOps rhythm: weekly player / captain / team health‑score reviews feed what you design and ship next
Push Notifications & Re‑Engagement
  • Own notification strategy and the notification design system: triggers, copy patterns, deep links, segmentation, and quiet hours
  • Design game‑day flows (reminders, score drops, post‑game stat pop‑ups) and challenge/streak triggers
  • Grow push opt‑in and keep notification health strong (CTR up, fatigue and unsubscribes down)
  • Partner with our lifecycle / CRM team so push, email, and in‑app messaging behave as one system
Mobile App Design
  • Design end‑to‑end user flows for new features (onboarding, social activity feed, messaging, events, game film)
  • Own the home dashboard — awards, badges, challenges, and activity feed
  • Create high‑fidelity screens and interactive prototypes; work with engineering for pixel‑perfect implementation
  • Conduct design QA on TestFlight and staging builds
  • Iterate based on behavioural data, session analytics, and player feedback
Design System & Brand Consistency
  • Maintain and extend our component library in Figma — including new gamification surfaces (badges, challenge cards, shareable graphics)
  • Ensure brand consistency across all digital product
  • Create reusable patterns and templates that scale; document design decisions and standards
Requirements
  • 5+ years of product design experience on mobile‑first consumer apps with real users at scale
  • You’ve taken progression, reward, loyalty, or retention features from concept to launch and can speak to the results they achieved
  • Expert‑level Figma skills (components, auto‑layout, prototyping, design systems)
  • Fluent in engagement metrics — D1/D7/D30 retention, DAU/WAU, opt‑in rates, funnel analysis (Mixpanel, Amplitude, or similar)
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating end‑to‑end product design (not just UI skins) — include at least one progression or retention system case study
  • Strong prototyping skills for communicating complex product experiences
  • Experience working in fast‑paced, startup or high‑growth environments
  • Excellent visual design skills - typography, layout, color, spacing
  • Strong communication skills - written and verbal
  • AI‑Native Mindset: you actively use AI to accelerate research, ideation, prototyping, documentation, and collaboration, including working with tools such as Cursor, Claude, Lovable, and other emerging AI‑powered workflows.
  • You constantly look for ways to automate repetitive work and increase speed without compromising quality.
  • 5 days in office at our Toronto HQ - Brodie has thrived due to a culture of collaboration and teamwork in office
Strongly Preferred
  • Background in sports betting / iGaming, or streak‑and‑progression consumer apps
  • Liveops experience: seasonal events, battle passes, daily / weekly quest systems
  • Motion design skills (Lottie, Rive, After Effects) - reward moments and badge reveals should feel earned
  • Experience optimizing notification performance and engagement at scale
  • Experience with Cursor, VS Code, or front‑end prototyping (HTML/CSS/React)
  • Experience working directly with mobile engineers
Why Join Brodie Rec League
  • Work on a product that 50,000+ athletes interact with every week — your designs directly shape how athletes engage with the league, both on and off the court
  • Own a product initiative that sits at the center of athlete engagement, retention, and long‑term growth
  • Mentorship from a multidisciplinary Product Design Director with deep experience across design, creative, and technical domains — and a track record of building and developing strong design teams
  • A brand people care about. Brodie has built something rare — a passionate community and a brand that resonates far beyond league night.
  • Comprehensive health and wellness plan
  • Access to a yearly Brodie takeover of the Toronto Raptors court
  • Professional development budget
  • Details regarding our full benefits package will be provided during the interview process
