Reporting to the Managing Director, the Senior Principal plays a key role in evaluating and managing private debt investments and external fund commitments. The Senior Principal’s activities include screening, due diligence and supporting the execution of new investments, ongoing monitoring of existing investments, participating in various projects, and staying abreast of trends in private credit and syndicated loan markets.
The Capital Markets & Credit Investments (CM&CI) department manages C$165B of capital markets and credit investments (56% of total net AUM of BCI). The department invests globally across Credit, Equities, Fixed Income, Derivatives, and Absolute Return Strategies, with investment teams located in BCI\'s global offices in Victoria, Vancouver, New York, and London. As a leader in responsible investing, CM&CI actively integrates ESG factors into investment analysis and decision-making processes across all strategies.
The Principal Credit Fund (PCF) manages over $19B in assets. The Fund focuses on sponsor-backed lending across North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. The team has established strategic partnerships with leading private debt managers and has expanded into asset-backed lending (ABL) to enhance diversification and risk-adjusted returns. ESG considerations remain integral to the investment process, reinforcing the commitment to responsible investing.
A relevant undergraduate/graduate university degree
7+ years experience in private debt, investment banking, M&A, private equity, management consulting, deal/financial advisory or rating agencies
Decisiveness and the ability to form and defend independent credit opinions
Strong financial modeling, research and analytical skills
Sound judgment and the ability to work independently
Experience with leveraged loans, middle market debt and/or high yield bonds
Experience or knowledge of loan settlement process
MBA/CFA designation or actively working towards it
Investment Analysis and Execution
Works as an integrated part of deal teams, supporting the diligence of commercial, financial, tax, legal and ESG aspects of prospective investments
Conducts and documents fundamental and relative value research on both private and public markets
Synthesizes findings, key analysis and supporting documents in an organized and documented manner
Writes effective screening, deal alert and investment memorandums. Delivers persuasive oral and written investment recommendations and rationale to the Principal Credit Investment Committee
Interacts effectively with third party advisors as well as with BCI internal groups (e.g., Legal, Tax, Risk)
Portfolio Monitoring and Oversight
Monitors assigned investments, identifying relevant opportunities and risks including: tracking/evaluating performance metrics, ongoing review against original investment thesis, ongoing strategic fit, significant changes impacting the company, valuation issues and industry developments
Systematically develops objective and rigorous views on the long-term health and risk of companies within the portfolio
This role will be based in our office in downtown Victoria, BC.
The annualized base salary range for this Victoria-based role is CAD $158,000 - $183,000.
