POSITION FUNCTION

Senior Parks Maintenance Workers contribute to the enhancement and upkeep of the City’s public parks and open spaces, utilizing specialised skill in the operation of industrial vehicles and a variety of hand tools and power equipment, to ensure the continued excellence of the City’s public spaces.

KEY DUTIES
Park Maintenance Support
  • Mowing, trimming, weeding, digging, raking, and removing refuse and debris.
  • Preparing, planting, and maintaining flower and shrub beds, landscapes, boulevards, turf, sports fields, and young trees.
  • Constructing and maintaining pathways, hard infrastructure, playgrounds, irrigation, furniture, playground equipment and ponds and streams.
  • Maintaining cemetery grounds and assisting with interments.
  • Grinding stumps, chipping brush and with direct supervision light pruning.
  • Watering of trees, baskets, turf, and various garden landscapes.
  • Maintaining tree wells, tree grates, and tree guards.
  • Flagging and directing traffic around equipment and operations and in public laneways.
  • Collecting data for the purpose of updating inventory and data collection apps.
  • Recording accurate daily equipment logs, material slips, time sheets and tree watering or maintenance records.
  • Providing instructions and information to other staff as required and respond to general enquiries from the public and other departments regarding park maintenance.
  • Conducting pre- and post-trip inspections, perform minor maintenance to vehicles, tools, and equipment.
Park Equipment Operation

The role performs its assigned functions through the operation of:

  • Various industrial-sized trucks: tanker trucks, aerial lift trucks, truck with trailer, hook lift truck, and leaf vacuum trucks with related equipment.
  • Brush chippers, loaders, and stump grinders.
  • Industrial tractors equipped with turf/horticultural attachments.
  • Small crane operation for loading and unloading materials and equipment.
  • Commercial ride-on mowers to maintain grass in public spaces, requiring proficiency in adjusting and maintaining reel and blade height and in loading and unloading the mower from the trailer.
  • Various light power equipment, such as light rollers, light all-terrain utility vehicles, concrete mixers, and small vibrating tampers.
  • Various small power tools and equipment such as chainsaws, power pole saws, push mowers, rototillers, edgers, blowers, line trimmers, hedge trimmers, sod cutters, grinders, sanders and cut saws.
  • Various hand tools related to park maintenance.

Perform related duties where required and qualified.

  • Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed while in progress.
  • Problems are referred to supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification
  • Grade 10
  • Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.
Experience
  • 2 years of directly related experience in commercial landscape, horticulture and/or tree maintenance including operating industrial landscape maintenance equipment and tools or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER
  • May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
