Ground News is hiring a Senior Android Engineer to lead the Android app's technical direction and growth initiatives. You will own high-quality Kotlin experiences, collaborate with Growth, Marketing and CRO, and shape the mobile architecture to drive conversion and revenue across millions of readers.

You will work within Ground News' Growth & Monetization framework, shaping experiments, tooling, and performance standards while maintaining a strong focus on accessibility and analytics.

Qualifications

The Opportunity: Senior Android Engineer

As a senior mobile engineer, you’ll share the technical direction of our Android app, which turns curious visitors into engaged, paying readers. This is a senior individual contributor role for someone with a strong, data-informed track record of growing both the user base and revenue from mobile. You'll sit within our mobile chapter and work day-to-day out of the Growth & Monetization pod, partnering closely with Growth, Marketing, the Sponsorships team, and our Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) function. Reporting to the Growth & Monetization App Lead, you'll set the bar for how we build, measure, and experiment on the Android.

Our stack includes Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, MVVM, Firebase and RevenueCat. You'll bring deep fluency in modern mobile engineering together with a growth mindset: you think in funnels, experiments, and conversion, and you have informed views on what moves the numbers on a consumer mobile property.

A defining goal of this role is to make our CRO, Marketing, and Sponsorships partners self-sufficient. Within your first 90-180 days, success looks like a marketing or growth teammate being able to ship a landing-page change, a modal, or a pricing experiment without an engineer in the loop. You'll evaluate and mature tooling: visual page and landing-page builders, experimentation platforms, analytics and CDP integrations.

This is a high-leverage role. You'll operate as the senior technical voice for mobile: shaping architecture, raising code quality, and steering the experimentation roadmap that compounds growth over time.

What You'll Do:

• Share the technical strategy for Ground News' mobile properties, with a direct mandate to grow the user base and subscription revenue from Android.

• Build and ship high-quality Kotlin experiences across our Android app's many conversion surfaces.

• Partner with the CRO, Growth, Marketing, and Sponsorships functions to translate hypotheses into experiments, making those partners self-sufficient so they can change subscription pages, modals, and copy without engineering in the loop.

• Own and evolve the marketing-tech stack: today our subscriptions work heavily with RevenueCat and Google Play directly, alongside A/B testing and experimentation platforms and analytics / CDP tooling—you'll lead that evolution and design the guardrails that keep it safe and performant.

• Mature and add rigour to our mobile experimentation program: framing hypotheses, sizing impact, ensuring clean measurement, and shipping winners while reading results honestly.

• Set the bar for mobile performance, accessibility, analytics, and Core Mobile Vitals on a consumer property serving millions of readers.

• Act as the senior voice in code review and architecture for the mobile chapter, expediting the PR process and raising overall engineering quality.

• Manage safe rollouts of the Android app: feature flagging, monitoring conversion and stability, and mitigating risk on revenue-critical surfaces.

• Maintain instrumentation of the funnel end to end so the team can trust its analytics and make decisions from data.

What You'll Bring:

• A strong, opinionated track record of growing the user base and revenue from mobile properties. You can point to specific outcomes you drove.

• Deep expertise building production mobile apps in Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, MVVM, Firebase and RevenueCat.

• Hands-on experience working with or alongside a CRO function, including fluency in the tooling and best practices of modern marketing technology.

• A demonstrated track record of running mobile experimentation (A/B and multivariate testing) and strong, well-formed opinions on how to do it well.

• Experience standing up self-serve tooling (trial screens and Superwall/Revenue Cat) that lets non-engineers ship changes safely; experience migrating between such platforms is a plus.

• Hands-on experience with PostHog is highly valued (Amplitude or Segment are acceptable substitutes), along with the instrumentation behind a trustworthy funnel.

• A sharp eye for mobile performance, accessibility, analytics, and conversion on consumer-scale properties.

• Experience shipping changes safely to production, including feature flagging, monitoring, and risk mitigation on revenue-critical surfaces.

• A collaborative, cross-functional approach—comfortable acting as a senior technical voice and partnering closely with Growth, Marketing, and CRO.

• Willingness to travel occasionally to our Kitchener, Ontario HQ and for company-wide All Hands meetups.

Bonus Points:

• Experience mentoring or technically coaching engineers.

• Experience with a subscription or consumer-media product and its growth motions.
