Job summary

Stantec is seeking a Senior/Intermediate Mine Water Quality Modelling Specialist to join our Environmental Services team in Canada. The position is preferably located in Victoria, Sidney, or Burnaby with relocation support and flexible office options. You will lead mine water quality models using GoldSim, develop environmental assessments, and mentor junior modelers.

The role collaborates with geochemists, hydrogeologists, and engineers on permitting and impact studies. A B.Sc.

Qualifications

• B.Sc. in Geochemistry, Hydrogeology, or Earth Sciences/Engineering with a focus on water quality.
• 10+ years of relevant mining consulting experience; professional registration (P.Geo./P.Eng.) preferred.
• Fluent understanding of Canadian water quality guidelines and permitting requirements.
• Proven ability to analyze data and communicate solutions effectively.
• Willingness to travel to field sites and client meetings.

Your Opportunity

Stantec has an opportunity for a Senior/Intermediate Mine Water Quality Modelling Specialist with a strong background to join our Environmental Services team. The position will ideally be located in either Victoria, Sidney or Burnaby, British Columbia but there is flexibility for our other offices and relocation assistance available. The ideal candidate is someone that can capitalize on existing client relationships to expand Stantec’s profile and market share in the regional and national market. The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to water quality and geochemistry field programs, environmental assessments, and environmental permitting activities for a variety of projects but with a focus on mining.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Primary responsibilities will be related to performing key tasks to support geochemical and water quality components of projects
• Promote a strong health and safety culture and actively participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment Program
• Lead development, and application of mine water quality models using GoldSim software with contaminant transport module, integrating geochemical source terms for mine waste rock, tailings, pit lakes, and underground workings
• Serve as technical lead or reviewer for complex mine water quality modelling projects
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to intermediate and junior modelers
• Support water quality components of projects including environmental assessments, models, and monitoring programs
• Collaborate with other scientific and engineering professionals within the practice on baseline and impact assessment projects, feasibility studies, groundwater and surface water assessments and contaminant investigations, and rehabilitation projects
• Lead multi-discipline modeling teams related to water aspects of mining projects, including geochemists, water quality specialists, hydrogeologists, and engineers
• Lead complex projects with a high degree of initiative and independence and apply a broad range of knowledge
• Provide guidance to clients, project managers and technical staff on mining related water issues
• Interpret and analyze data, providing related technical support for water resource and environmental projects
• Prepare technical reports and perform QA/QC of technical documents
• Perform data analysis and data visualization through the use of technical software
• Conduct and support fieldwork as needed
• Execution of related proposal development and project task financial and schedule management

Your Capabilities and Credentials

• Extensive experience of Goldsim software with contaminant transport module
• Strong understanding of mine water management systems and mine water quality prediction
• Fluent understanding of Canadian and provincial water quality guidelines, legislation, regulations, licensing and permitting particularly relating to mining in British Columbia, Ontario and Atlantic Canada
• Ability and willingness to travel to lead field crews, perform environmental monitoring, or participate in off-site meetings with clients and/or regulatory agencies
• Fundamental understanding of project-task management
• Proven ability to analyze field and technical data, perform research, demonstrate technical knowledge, and problem solve
• Strong organizational and communications skills (able to communicate solutions in writing, verbally, and graphically)
• Strong technical aptitude
• Time management skills in balancing immediate and long-term work with varying priorities and deadlines
• Solid computer skills are a must including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
• Knowledge of water chemistry and contaminant transport modeling software (i.e. PHREEQC, Minteq, MIN3P, Excel, database software, etc.
• Experience preparing environmental assessments/ impact statements and other regulatory applications

Education and Experience

Minimum of a B.Sc. in Geochemistry, Hydrogeology, or Earth Sciences/Engineering with a specific focus in the areas of water quality, geochemistry, preference may be given to those with advanced degree

Minimum of 10+ years of experience, which must include relevant consulting experience in the mining sector, including mine water quality predictions, water quality modelling or the assessment of water quality impacts, preference may be given to those 15+ years of experience

Professional registration or eligibility is required (P.Geo. or P.Eng.).

Valid Driver’s License required.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.

Pay Range

• Locations Outside of Lower Mainland - BC & Various locations in Ontario-$98,700.00 - $148,100.00 Annually
• Locations in Lower Mainland - BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario-$104,600.00 - $157,000.00 Annually

In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
