The Great Bear project is a development-stage asset located in the renowned and prolific Red Lake mining district, and represents one of the most exciting recent gold discoveries globally. The project has excellent potential to become a top-tier deposit that could support a large, long-life mine complex. Kinross’ comprehensive exploration and development program will aim to support the vision of a quality, high-grade, open-pit mine and a longer-term, sizeable underground mine.

Job Summary

As a Senior Mine Engineer for the Great Bear Advanced Exploration Project (AEX), you will be responsible for leading and executing a full range of engineering functions to support underground mine development and exploration. You will be accountable for planning, scheduling, and engineering design work that drives safe and efficient underground development.

During the planning phase, the primary focus will be to work with the site team and the selected underground mining contractor to finalize detailed engineering and prepare for underground mobilization. During the execution of the AEX underground, this role will help support the underground mine design, mining contractor management, and underground operations.

The Senior Mine Engineer will also work closely with Great Bear Mine Technical Services Manager and Kinross Technical Services (KTS) to ensure the AEX design and schedule aligns with the broader Main Project Production plan, open pit and underground mine schedule integration, and support detailed design, resource definition, and long-term strategy development.

This position plays a critical role in supporting project advancement through pre-commercial development, including contributions to the Strategic Business Plan, capital project input, and cross-functional coordination with exploration, construction, and operations.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Lead the development of short-, medium-, and long-range underground mine plans that align with project sequencing, safety standards, strategic objectives, and production schedules.
  • Coordinate and finalize detailed engineering deliverables in collaboration with the underground mining contractor and the site project team ahead of the first blast milestone.
  • Collaborate with KTS to align AEX design and planning with Main Production Project objectives and timelines.
  • Support Great Bear and KTS with Main Production Project planning, providing site-level input and engineering data to inform life-of-mine design and production strategy.
  • Supervise and mentor junior engineers and planners (once on board), ensuring alignment with engineering best practices and company policies.
  • Collaborate with the Rock Mechanics and Geology teams to ensure ground control, ore control strategies and exploration drilling timing are embedded in mine planning.
  • Design phases based on geological block models, and other constraints such as mining limitations, slope design criteria, topography, facility location.
  • Design waste dumps, stockpiles, access roads, ramps, and other mine site facilities.
  • Ensure pit designs are properly implemented on site.
  • Monitor daily, weekly and monthly development performance, providing variance analysis and recommending corrective actions.
  • Prepare 18-month rolling plans and maintain 3–6-month development schedules across all underground zones.
  • Review and validate mine designs including lateral development, stope layouts, access ramps, ventilation raises, and infrastructure placement.
  • Lead or participate in underground inspections and safety audits; implement best practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform reconciliation to the short-term plans and identify areas for improvement.
  • Evaluate alternative mining scenarios to optimize productivity and safety.
  • Identify risks (equipment reliability, grade, crusher/mill reliability, etc.) and opportunities that may impact the mine plans.
  • Manage project engineering deliverables for ventilation, dewatering, electrical, and other underground infrastructure systems.
  • Compile and update resources and reserve estimates and support annual technical reporting requirements.
  • Support capital project planning, including preparation of AFEs and participation in project execution.
  • Participate in site-wide forecasting, budgeting, and cost control processes.
  • Make recommendations that maximize efficiency and productivity for the operation.
  • Maintain accurate records and files.
  • Ensure all mine designs comply with safety regulations, and company standards.
  • Work in a healthy work environment with full support, cooperation, and commitment to satisfy our operation’s goal of being accident-free.
  • Support a work environment that is aligned with Kinross’ Safeground principles.
  • Comply with federal and provincial acts and regulations, and legal requirements.
