Job description

Title: Senior Metallurgist

Located in Downtown Vancouver’s central business district, this area is a dense, high-end urban neighborhood dominated by major office towers, financial institutions, and professional services. Employees in Vancouver mostly follow a hybrid schedule where they are required to work in office, attend in-person meetings or training and may also collaborate virtually. It offers a fast-paced, corporate environment with strong transit access and a mix of nearby dining, retail, and residential amenities.

What You Will Do

Under general supervision, provides technical knowledge and guidance in metallurgical testing and analysis at assigned site.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Conduct, plan and assist with metallurgical study, development, testing and analyses of designs, processes or procedures including a variety of ore grinding mill types, sulfide flotation, crushing, grinding, thickening, filtering, pumping and dewatering processes at assigned site.
  • Serve as technical professional on complex metallurgical testing including hydrometallurgical process modeling and simulation experience using advanced excel and Metism, JKSimMet, or other modeling software. Report metallurgical or process issues and make recommendations to Chief Metallurgist on how to resolve/correct the issues.
  • Review and recommend new or enhanced metallurgical testing equipment or protocols. Contribute to the improvement of metallurgical process.
  • Evaluate and administer contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment.
  • Provide guidance and counsel to the site management team on applicable programs, practices and existing/proposed local, state and federal regulations. Maintain current working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local regulations.
  • May contribute to site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for metallurgical testing.
  • May represent the site on company-sponsored steering teams.
  • Perform other duties as requested.
What You Bring to Freeport
  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Chemistry or related engineering discipline and five (5) years’ experience in Metallurgy or related scientific field, OR
  • Master’s degree in Metallurgy, Chemistry or related engineering discipline and three (3) years’ experience in Metallurgy or related scientific field
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Mineral Processing, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or PE) designation, or ability to obtain certification.
  • Experience supporting major capital projects through scoping, prefeasibility, feasibility, FEED/FEL, detailed engineering, commissioning, and startup.
  • Experience working with EPCM/EPC contractors and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong knowledge of mineral processing operations including crushing, grinding, flotation, thickening, filtration, tailings, and reagent systems.
  • Proficiency with process simulation and mass balance software such as METSIM, HSC, JKSimMet, JKSimFloat, or equivalent.
  • Experience developing and reviewing PFDs, P&IDs, design criteria, equipment specifications, process control philosophies, and operating strategies.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, startup, ramp-up, and operational readiness activities.
What We Offer You

The estimated annual pay-range for this role is currently $110,000 - $140,000 CAD. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance. More details will be shared during the hiring process.
