What You’ll Do

The Senior Mechanical Engineer - P.Eng is responsible for managing all aspects of mechanical design for assigned projects. In addition, as the project manager for assigned projects, this role is the main point of contact with primary responsibility and decision-making authority for planning, implementing, control/monitoring and closure of each project. Efficient delivery of project deliverables, effective quality control, clear communication of expectations to stakeholders and upward reporting are critical tasks that must be performed throughout each project's lifecycle.

This position is based out of our Burnaby, BC office. Salary range $110‑130k/year.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage all aspects of mechanical design activities for assigned projects.
  • Remain current on systems, technologies and product lines.
  • Review and understand the required scope of works as per the RFP and the proposal documents.
  • Understand budgets for project to design within.
  • Acquire record drawings in electronic format, if project is for an existing building.
  • Provide brief design outline report to client of intended systems and services scope, if not specified in the proposal.
  • Provide schematic designs and details for several types of systems within all the disciplines noted above.
  • Determine standards or codes that must be adhered to (example: ASHRAE, CSA, health care standards / codes etc.).
  • Discuss and agree design intent with Engineer of Record (EOR) and create basic schematic hand sketch layouts.
  • Complete calculations and preliminary equipment selections, familiarity with Trace 3D plus load calculation software.
  • Prepare detailed designs for several types of systems within all the disciplines noted above and able to markup drawings providing clear directions to other team members on the same.
  • Provide electrical power requirements for equipment and weights of major equipment to other team members so they can make allowance and confirm suitability.
  • Create AutoCAD or Revit drawings, as specified in the proposal, finalize equipment selections and draft specifications.
  • Conduct peer and EOR reviews.
  • Send drawings for review and comment to other team members; finalize drawings and specifications for BP; provide signed and stamped drawings by E to Coordinating Registered Professional (CRP).
  • Provide drawings and specifications for pricing.
  • Conduct job showing to bidders, answer bidder queries and issue addendums, if required.
  • Review/approve shop drawings within 5 days of receipt.
  • Attend site meetings / reviews and issue Field Review Reports within 3 days.
  • Contract admin services including progress claim reviews, issuance of addenda, CO’s and RFIs.
  • Review and comment on equipment shop drawings, record drawings, O&M manuals, balance and commissioning reports provided by contractor.
  • Issue closeout form identifying agreed date of commencement of contractor’s warranties, at point of substantial completion of the project.
Project Management Support
  • Review and understand the required scope of works as per the Request for Proposal (RFP) and the project proposal documents.
  • Manage all phases of the project including the planning, implementation, control & monitoring and close out activities for the project, ensuring project goals, on time completion, within budget, and a satisfied.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years of experience in HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and/or DDC controls.
  • Professional Engineer or Professional Engineer Limited License with APEGA and/or EGBC, as applicable.
  • Proficient with AutoCAD & Revit, and with the Microsoft Suite of products.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects from implementation to closure in HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and/or DDC controls.
  • Valid Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operator's License to facilitate independent travel to project sites and other office locations.
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a range of personalities to establish effective working relationships with the required stakeholders.
