Job summary

Stantec is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Delivery Center Team in Canada. You will lead design tasks across mining, oil & gas, and power sectors, applying codes and standards and coordinating with clients and consultants.

You will guide junior engineers, develop DBMs, and contribute to standardization while delivering quality project outcomes in a dynamic environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 15+ years of mechanical engineering experience in mining-related projects.
  • PE designation with multi-jurisdiction eligibility.
  • Strong experience with mechanical design software and codes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex mechanical designs and prepare drawings, reports & presentations.
  • Ensure compliance with piping, vessel codes and material standards.
  • Mentor junior staff and guide engineering solutions.

Senior Mechanical Engineer – Delivery Center Team

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our newly formed Delivery Center Team within the Energy & Resources (E&R) Business Operating Unit. The role supports a broad spectrum of projects across mining, materials, metals, oil & gas, and power and dams sectors, and is based in a location in Canada where the E&R BOU has a presence.

Essential Functions
  • Perform advanced engineering design tasks on assigned projects under minimal supervision, including engineering drawings, calculations, engineering reports, and presentations.
  • Apply appropriate codes and standards to projects and designs, including piping and pressure vessel codes, material standards, and various static and rotating equipment codes and standards.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders in project requirement meetings, coordination meetings with internal and/or external consultants, owner and contractor, sub‑contractors, and vendors in preparation and coordination of project specifications.
  • Oversee and manage the quality of project deliverables using Stantec’s quality control guidelines.
  • Act as a technical advisor on more unusual or complex issues and guide staff on solutions.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of current principles and practices of mechanical engineering and keep informed of new methods and developments.
  • Apply knowledge and expertise acquired through progressive experience to resolve complex issues where precedent may be limited.
  • Leading by example, integrate continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
  • Contribute to the development of standardized calculation or design templates.
  • Develop Design Basis Memorandums (DBMs).
  • Participate in client requirement and design review meetings.
  • Contribute to the development of new standards and specifications of mechanical design.
  • Create implementation instructions and scopes of work for construction work packages.
  • Create pre‑commissioning or commissioning procedures.
  • Lead creation of project and/or material specifications.
  • Engage in the development of a design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
  • Utilize technologies in the development of models of mechanical systems and provide markups for junior engineers/designers.
  • Prepare and revise documentation in various mechanical phases.
  • Participate in client/vendor/contractor meetings potentially including HAZOP, 3D model reviews and design reviews.
  • Develop project scope, budgets, and design approach for all sizes of projects.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control on own projects and projects of peers.
  • Assist in the development of new standards and specifications for the mechanical group.
  • Produce piping specifications and hydrotest procedures.
  • Participate in constructability reviews.
  • Manage and execute mechanical engineering deliverables on multiple projects in a dynamic work environment.
  • Be the engineer of record for designs and documents you create and oversee.
  • Provide direct mentoring to assigned staff; develop staff skills and abilities by providing guidance and mentoring to strengthen technical abilities.
  • Become a champion of Stantec’s EH&S program.
Capabilities and Credentials
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • At least 15 years of mechanical engineering work experience related to mining projects.
  • Professional Engineering designation in home jurisdiction with eligibility for registration in other jurisdictions.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of project delivery models including E, EP, EPC, EPCM; well versed in basic project management practices.
  • Advanced understanding of mechanical engineering specifications, analytical tools and software, industry standards, practices, and applicable codes/regulations.
  • Experience in numerous sectors and geographies is an asset.
  • Familiarity with mechanical design software (Autodesk, Bentley and Hexagon products) including AutoCAD, AutoPLANT, CADWorx, Caesar II, AutoPIPE, Inventor, PV Elite and other related software such as AFT, NozzlePRO, and FEPipe is also an asset.
  • Strong understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
  • Proven mentoring skills and desire to work with and encourage junior staff.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
  • Checks the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manages time to meet project budget and schedule.
  • Participates and collaborates in multidisciplinary project team settings and engages in creative and critical thought with a passion for successful outcomes.
  • Demonstrates creativity, foresight and mature engineering judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
  • Thorough understanding of mechanical engineering concepts and ability to proactively and effectively communicate ideas to others.
  • Detailed understanding of and ability to execute/work with project deliverables such as Process Flow Diagrams, P&IDs, Isometrics, General Arrangements, equipment list, line list, etc.
  • Detailed understanding of various equipment used in oil & gas such as vessels, tanks, heat exchangers & coolers, heaters, rotating equipment (pumps and compressors), packaged equipment, valves & specialty items.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work across multiple offices and geographies while managing competing priorities.
  • Exemplary communication skills to effectively interface with all team members.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and a proven ability to write clear, thorough technical reports.
  • Holds paramount corporate HSSE requirements and promotes a culture of HSSE excellence.

Pay Range
  • Locations Outside of Lower Mainland – BC & various locations in Ontario: $106,700 – $156,700 annually.
  • Locations in Lower Mainland – BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario: $111,700 – $167,600 annually.
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note that the final agreed‑upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part‑time roles will be pro‑rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
