Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer for the Buildings + Places team in Calgary. The role focuses on hyperscale data centers, with an emphasis on scale, speed, and consistency. The position allows a partially remote schedule, with a minimum of three days onsite weekly and occasional travel.

The candidate will lead the mechanical team, coordinate with disciplines, and ensure projects meet budget, schedule, and high standards of safety and performance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with six years HVAC, plumbing or fire protection design experience
• Professional Engineer License (P.Eng.) with APEGA required
• Bachelor's in mechanical engineering; 10+ years HVAC/plumbing/fire protection design preferred
• Experience with CAD and BIM; strong leadership and client relationships
• Certifications (CEM/BEMP/LEED) advantageous

Responsibilities

• Act as the primary client contact, responding promptly and professionally
• Develop and maintain strong client relationships and set clear expectations
• Coordinate with multiple disciplines and lead the mechanical team (HVAC, fire protection, plumbing) to meet budgets and schedules
• Develop detailed specifications for mechanical equipment (pumps, fans, AHUs)
• Write reports for internal and external purposes
• Ensure discipline plans meet project scope and schedule
• Stay current on codes for mechanical/plumbing systems in hyperscale data centers
• Analyze mechanical performance and recommend upgrades to optimize efficiency
• Provide technical support during construction and respond to RFIs
• Attend site visits, project meetings, and commissioning activities
• Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations
• Evaluate new technologies to enhance performance and reduce costs
• Collaborate with electrical/mechanical teams to integrate data center infrastructure
• Analyze energy usage and identify optimization opportunities
