It also drives modernization of internal manufacturing through CNC automation, additive manufacturing, and new production practices. The position provides high‑level technical guidance to engineering, production, and assembly teams and is a key contributor throughout the product lifecycle, from concept through sustained production.
Responsibilities
Lead Mechanical Design
- Create detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings in SolidWorks for hydrophone and transducer subassemblies and mechanical housings.
- Design fixtures, jigs, molds, and assembly tooling.
- Perform trade‑analysis balancing performance, cost, and manufacturability.
- Apply GD&T and tolerance stack‑up principles to ensure repeatable, reliable assembly.
- Lead Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews and collaborate with engineering and production stakeholders.
- Maintain drawing standards, revision control, and technical documentation.
- Support product development from concept, through prototyping, to production handoff.
Prototype Fabrication, Machining & Toolmaking
- Program, operate, and maintain manual and CNC machining equipment.
- Fabricate precision components, fixtures, housings, and tooling.
- Interpret engineering drawings and CAD models for accurate fabrication.
- Recommend design modifications to improve manufacturability or performance.
- Build and maintain mechanical fixtures for hydrophone and transducer testing.
Additive Manufacturing & Advanced Processes
- Lead adoption and operation of additive manufacturing systems (polymer and/or metal).
- Identify opportunities where AM can reduce lead time or cost.
- Develop hybrid workflows combining machining and AM.
- Establish internal standards for AM‑produced components.
Technical Problem Solving
- Support integration of mechanical and electronic components.
- Assist assembly staff in resolving mechanical challenges.
- Provide input on material selection, mechanical testing, and root‑cause investigations.
- Support ISO‑compliant documentation and process improvements.
Machine Shop Development & Continuous Improvement
- Set up and maintain the machine shop environment.
- Implement 5S, safety practices, and preventive maintenance schedules.
- Organize tooling, work holding, and machining workflows for rapid turnaround.
- Evaluate and recommend new equipment or tools based on ROI and capability needs.
- Develop internal machining and AM standards to ensure consistency and quality.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.
- 8–15 years mechanical design and machining experience.
- Extensive SolidWorks experience (complex assemblies, drawings, configurations).
- Hands‑on experience with manual and CNC machining.
- Significant experience in fixture and manufacturing tooling design.
- Additive manufacturing experience preferred.
- Background in marine, acoustics, defence, or electronics packaging is an asset.
- Expert proficiency in SolidWorks modelling, drafting, and GD&T application.
- Strong understanding of machining practices, tolerances, and materials science.
- Ability to design and fabricate complex mechanical components.
Key Outcomes
- Quality and manufacturability of mechanical designs.
- Accuracy and lead time of machined and printed components.
- Successful adoption and integration of advanced manufacturing methods.
- Reduction in design rework and production delays.
- 95% schedule adherence and Zero material‑ready delays caused by mechanical design or tooling readiness.
