Job summary

Type One Energy Group seeks a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead first-of-a-kind stellarator design efforts. You will translate requirements into robust mechanical solutions, mentor junior engineers, and build FE/CFD models using ANSYS and COMSOL.

You’ll design vacuum vessels, divertors and plasma-facing components, collaborate across teams, and prepare procurement packages while balancing performance, manufacturability, and schedule.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering; master’s preferred.
• 10+ years experience in similar engineering environments.
• Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills.
• Expertise in mechanical design and lifecycle reliability.
• Experience with first-of-a-kind components and fusion energy systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead design of systems and components for stellarator fusion plants.
• Mentor junior engineers on diverse projects.
• Translate requirements into functional components and systems.
• Develop designs and technical specifications for stellarator systems.
• Assess interface requirements between systems.
• Develop FE/CFD models using ANSYS, COMSOL, and other tools.
• Create procurement packages and support fabrication.
• Resolve technical questions during fabrication.

Your role in the mission:

Type One Energy are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with first of a kind design and integration skills.

The primary function of this position is to provide conceptual, preliminary and final design of systems and components for our stellarator fusion power plants. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will act as a mentor to junior engineers on a variety of projects and systems including vacuum vessels, divertors and plasma facing components. Other responsibilities include:

• Translating design requirements into functional stellarator components and systems.
• Develop system and component designs and associated technical specifications for our stellarator systems.
• Analyze and align the interface requirements between and among stellarator systems.
• Develop and validate Finite Element (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models using ANSYS, COMSOL, and other tools.
• Develop procurement packages.
• Resole any technical questions which may occur during the fabrication efforts.

What you’ll need:

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline, Master’s degree is preferred.
• 10+ years of relevant experience in similar engineering environments.
• Demonstrated leadership, project management, communication, and problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to manage complex technical challenges.
• Expert in mechanical design principles, failure modes, and lifecycle reliability.
• Proficiency in cost, schedule, and resource planning.
• Skilled in balancing trade-offs across performance, manufacturability, and regulation.
• Experience with design of first of a kind components.
• Familiarity with Computer Aided Design and Analysis software
• Experience with design of fusion energy systems and equipment is desirable
• Experience with Siemens NX CAD software is highly desirable.
• Experience operating within a PDM environment in CAD
