The Senior Manager, Credit Risk Governance contributes to the overall success of Retail Credit Risk in Canada by providing effective challenge on credit risk proposals and supporting activities under the Bank’s regulatory compliance management program, to ensure the portfolio is managed in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

  • Champion a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge
  • Provide independent oversight as a second line “2B” function on key policy and credit risk strategy changes, ensuring alignment with the established governance process
  • Review and provide effective challenge on Credit Risk Proposals (CRPs) and strategies to ensure alignment with the Bank’s established policies and risk appetite. This includes a comprehensive review of proposed strategies from a Retail Risk business point of view.
  • Analyze and make recommendations to improve origination/account management and underwriting strategies, along with improvements to existing processes and procedures
  • Liaise with the policy teams and first line partners (as required), addressing any identified gaps in the CRP and provides input and guidance on mitigating strategies, as applicable
  • Ensure ongoing strategy performance monitoring, make recommendations on existing strategies, procedures and policies, and support reporting to senior management
  • Support activities under the Bank's Regulatory Compliance Management (RCM) Program for Retail Credit Risk (i.e. Unsecured, Automotive, Small Business) including identifying regulatory changes, maintaining regulatory and control libraries, conducting Compliance Risk and Control Assessments, as applicable
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders including the business line, control and support functions to maintain ongoing awareness of industry best practices and regulatory requirements
  • Carry out special projects or investigations as requested by senior management
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk

What you will need
  • Graduate degree in Finance, Economics, Business or related field
  • A minimum of 5 to 7 years of relevant work experience in the financial services industry
  • An understanding of retail risk lending strategies for unsecured, automotive and small business
  • Knowledge of credit risk management origination techniques and strategies in Retail credit, including the design of champion/challenger tests and risk strategies utilizing credit risk scores
  • Strong financial analysis and written skills complemented with solid deductive reasoning, and sound judgement
  • Exposure to delinquency rates, loan loss provisions and recoveries
  • Attention to detail, strong planning and organization skills, with ability to multi-task and manage changing priorities
  • Ability to work independently and provide sound recommendations
