Job summary

Localcoin, headquartered in Toronto, is hiring a Senior Java Back-End Developer to join the engineering team in Etobicoke on a hybrid schedule. You will design, develop, and maintain backend applications, ensuring security, scalability, and reliable integrations with front-end teams.

The role requires 5+ years in backend Java, Spring, RESTful services, and strong SQL; familiarity with Maven/Gradle, Git, Docker, and NGINX is valued. You will mentor juniors and contribute to system improvements.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in backend development with Java 8 and Spring Boot, RESTful services, and microservices experience.
• Proficient in SQL and relational DB design, with solid data modeling skills.
• Strong knowledge of Git flow, Maven/Gradle, Docker, and NGINX in modern CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with testing and security practices for backend services (JUnit, Sonar, security best practices).

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain secure, scalable Java backend services.
• Collaborate with frontend/UI teams to ensure smooth integration and performance.

THE ROLE

Salary Range: $120,000 - $140,000

Localcoin seeks to inspire the future of digital currency globally as the largest bitcoin ATM network in Canada. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about learning new technologies to join our growing Engineering team as our Senior Java Back End Developer.

As a Senior Java Back-End Developer at Localcoin, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining functional and stable back end applications for our company, ensuring system consistency and availability. Working alongside the Engineering team, you should have an unyielding desire to learn and broaden your horizon along with contributing towards daily deliverables. You should be a team player, familiar with the Agile framework of delivery.

This position will be based out of our office in Etobicoke, ON, and will have a hybrid work schedule of 2 days a week.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

• Work closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders to design and implement secure, scalable, and maintainable integration solutions aligned with business strategy.
• Ensure applications and integrations adhere to best practices for security, compliance, and data protection, proactively identifying and mitigating vulnerabilities.
• Develop, maintain, troubleshoot, and debug Java applications and integrations, ensuring high availability and optimal performance.
• Collaborate with UI teams to ensure seamless front-end and back-end interactions, optimizing for performance, security, and user experience.
• Implement secure coding practices, conduct peer code reviews, and contribute to system stability and resilience.
• Monitor application performance, identify bottlenecks, and enhance efficiency to improve user experience and system reliability.
• Respond to integration issues, resolve production incidents efficiently, and contribute to post-mortem analysis and improvements.
• Stay updated with the latest Java development trends, security best practices, and architectural improvements to enhance system robustness.
• Guide and mentor junior developers, fostering a culture of learning, best practices, and technical excellence. Provide support through code reviews, technical guidance, and skill development.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• 5+ years in backend development and strong knowledge in Java 8 along with Maven or Gradle.
• In-depth experience with Spring framework, including Spring - Boot, JPA, MVC and Spring Security for building RESTful services.
• Experience with functional testing, unit testing, code coverage and static code analysis tools such as Sonar.
• Experience with BDD and related tools.
• Strong proficiency in SQL. DDL, DML, relational database design and indexing in any well known SQL databases such as MySQL, Postgres, Oracle DB, MSSQL
• Proficient in Git flow, Maven, NGINX and Docker.

NICE TO HAVES

• Experience with any CI/CD platforms on the cloud
• Expertise on Linux platforms and shell commands
• Good understanding of cloud environments like AWS/GPC
• Experience in Angular/React JS
• Expertise using Swagger and/or Postman tools
• Good understanding about database-migration tools such as Flyway
