Citi is seeking a Senior AI Engineering Manager to guide multiple teams building AI-powered systems in a hybrid model. The role blends hands-on architecture with people leadership and strategic tech direction across Java, Python, and ML frameworks.

You will shape scalable AI solutions, mentor engineers, manage budgets, and collaborate with tech and business leaders across Citi's global organization.

Job description

As a Senior Java Architect at Citi, you will lead a team of engineers building Large Language Model and Retrieval-Augmented Generation solutions that power next-generation applications across the organization. You will combine hands‑on technical direction with people leadership, shaping how Citi designs, builds, and scales AI‑driven systems using Java, Python, and modern machine learning frameworks. This role sits within Citi's Technology function and offers the chance to influence architecture decisions that reach a global engineering organization.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of AI and machine learning solutions, including Large Language Model and Retrieval-Augmented Generation architectures.
• Manage multiple engineering teams, setting technical direction and tracking delivery against established goals.
• Oversee hiring, performance evaluations, and career development for engineers across your teams.
• Own budget planning and resource allocation for AI engineering initiatives, monitoring outcomes against targets.
• Define engineering standards and best practices for applications development, ensuring consistent, high‑quality delivery.
• Resolve complex technical and operational issues by applying deep expertise in AI engineering and broader technology knowledge.
• Negotiate priorities and align delivery plans with senior stakeholders across technology and business functions.
• Safeguard Citi and its clients by identifying risk early, applying sound judgment, and escalating control issues with transparency.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• 10 or more years of relevant engineering experience, including people or team leadership.
• Strong hands‑on experience building applications in Java.
• Proven industry experience designing and delivering Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning solutions.
• Proficiency in Python with experience using frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, LangChain, or Hugging Face.
• Deep hands‑on experience with Large Language Models such as GPT, Llama, or Claude.
• Solid understanding of Natural Language Processing concepts, techniques, and evaluation methods.
• Experience containerizing applications with Docker and orchestrating them using Kubernetes.

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with document digitization technologies such as Tesseract, Abbyy, Kofax, or Google Vision combined with AI and machine learning.
• Experience migrating legacy applications to microservices or micro‑frontend based architectures.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure and their AI and machine learning services.
