Job summary

Bird Construction seeks a Senior Estimator (Buildings) in Edmonton to develop accurate cost estimates for mechanical scopes, including labor, materials, and equipment. You will perform quantity take-offs from drawings and prepare detailed estimates for rotating equipment, boiler, piping, and welding work in line with estimating procedures.

Base in the Edmonton, AB office, you will solicit supplier quotations, attend tender meetings, review documents, and prepare final tender packages.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree, relevant trade certificate or equivalent experience.
• Eligible for or have attained PQS, CET or P. Eng designation
• 8+ years’ hands-on experience as Estimator in ICI construction up to $100+ million
• 10+ years’ experience in General Contracting; production or field ops is a plus
• Mechanical scope expertise is an asset
• Strong knowledge of estimating techniques, tendering, and contracts negotiation
• Ability to read and interpret plans, specs, and technical material
• Experience with estimating software: On-screen Takeoff, Accubid, InEight
• Experience with project software: Primavera P6, InEight, Viewpoint
• Strong Excel/Word/Outlook/Bluebeam skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities with a sense of urgency
• Collaborative, positive team player

Responsibilities

• Quantify tender document aspects including requirements, specs, and drawings.
• Review estimate packages for accuracy and completeness before quotation.
• Prepare clarification questions to obtain missing information.
• Prepare final estimate summaries addressing scope, pricing and completeness.
• Advise Project Manager on cost/schedule fluctuations and material availability.
• Review estimates with management as directed and hand over tender to construction team.

Senior Estimator (Buildings)Reporting to the Estimating Manager, the Senior Estimator is responsible for developing accurate cost estimates, including subcontractor pricing, for mechanical scopes of work. This role performs detailed quantity take‑offs from construction drawings and prepares labour, equipment, and material estimates for rotating equipment, boiler, piping, and welding work in accordance with established estimating processes and procedures.

This position will be based in the Edmonton, AB office.

What You Will Be Working On

• Solicit supplier quotation for material, equipment, and sub-trade quotations, whether internal to Bird Construction or from external approved suppliers.

• Attend pre-tender meetings, site walk down meetings, estimate reviews, and tender closing.

• Prepare detailed, accurate, professional estimates by calculating material quantity take offs, equipment, and labour rates for tender verification. Using industry standard estimating norms and site production factors or by using historical data from similar estimates.

• Recommend multiple scenarios based on cost, engineering quality or material availability.

• Identify most competitive rates based on cost analysis and comparison.

• Review and evaluate proposal contract, specifications and drawings to determine scope of work and the content of the estimate.

• Quantify all aspects of the tender document, including tender requirements, written specifications, and project drawings.

• Review estimate packages to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to final quotation.

• Create clarification questions to obtain missing information.

• Prepare final estimate summaries and qualifications ensuring that they address scope, pricing and comprehensiveness.

• Advise the Project Manager on cost and schedule fluctuations, changes in material availability or other factors affecting construction.

• Review estimates with management as appropriate, or as directed to by management.

• Prepare hand over of project tender and schedule to construction team.

What We Are Looking For

• Undergraduate degree, relevant trade certificate or equivalent experience.

• Eligible for or have attained PQS, CET or P. Eng designation

• 8+ years’ “hands‑on” experience in the capacity of Estimator including a full range of project delivery methods of ICI construction project up to $100+ million.

• 10+ years’ experience working in the General Contracting industry. Experience in Production or Field Operations would be considered an asset.

• Mechanical scope expertise is considered an asset.

• Extensive knowledge and experience with estimating techniques, tendering process and negotiating contracts.

• Ability to read and interpret construction related documents including plans, specifications, and other technical material.

• Experience working with estimating software programs such as On-screen Takeoff, Accubid, and InEight.

• Experience with operational software such as Primavera P6, InEight, Viewpoint, etc. an asset.

• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and Bluebeam.

• Ability to forge, grow and maintain positive relationships with project team, subtrades, consultants and client.

• Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet the time demands of unpredictable activities, capable of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamic business environment.

• Ability to work within tight deadlines and prioritization of work to achieve them.

• Strong analytical, critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem‑solving skills, strong math skills and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
