Job description

Working as a Senior Environmental Scientist, Portfolio Manager - Northern Projects in the Brownfield & Assessment Service Group providing environmental site assessment (ESA), remediation and re-development services for clients with sites in Northern Canada including Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon. This position focuses on the growth of new and recurring business for the Service Group, mentorship and development of high-performing client team(s) and execution of excellent project management services. The incumbent establishes strong relationships with existing and new clients and utilizes strong business acumen to recognize and develop business opportunities that align with MEMS’ Business Plan. The incumbent will build on MEMS experienced and technically strong teams to successfully execute moderately complex to complex work plans on northern/arctic sites. This incumbent can manage multiple work scopes or projects with various project managers in alignment with MEMS’ overall corporate strategy. The position is primarily office-based in a demanding consultative environment.

*Please note the preferred location for this position is in Northwest Territories, Yukon, or Nunavut. However, candidates based in our other office locations (Calgary, Sherwood Park, Grande Prairie, Fort. St. John, Saskatoon) will also be considered.*

Key Responsibilities:

The key responsibilities of this position are identified below, but other duties may evolve as required.

Growth

  • Contributing, implementing and maintaining client business growth plans, creating the conditions that result in long-term repeat business;
  • Communicating client intel to Management/Executive and work to develop appropriate responses; and
  • Working with the Business Development team by facilitating opportunities for networking, meeting with potential clients and providing client intelligence and technical resources to support business development activities.

Client Portfolio and Project Management

  • Managing a portfolio of client(s) sites of intermediate to high complexity including distribution to, leadership of and oversight of client project management and scope execution teams;
  • Manage projects of medium to high complexity including multiple disciplines, sub-consultants and regulatory requirements in accordance with MEMS project management requirements;
  • Apply appropriate portfolio and project management techniques including executing effective change management, leadership and mentoring of team personnel, and maintenance of client relationship; and
  • Ensure MEMS, client and legislative Health & Safety requirements are understood, implemented and monitored for consistent application by the client team.

Technical Engagement

  • Complete senior review and provide technical direction in the preparation of proposals and work scopes for assessment and risk projects and tasks in Northern settings.
  • Provide technical oversight to assessment, remediation and reclamation that must take into consideration the challenges of northern sites.

Mentorship

  • Identify competency gaps within the service group and communicate these effectively to the Service Group Director;
  • Contribute to the development and execution of mentorship and competency training programs; and
  • Mentorship, supervision and promotion of career development for all staff.

What You Bring:

  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in environmental site assessment and remediation, preferably in a consulting environment.
  • Experience successfully managing and maintaining client relationships.
  • Knowledge and experience with relevant northern territorial or provincial legislation and familiarity with the environmental site assessment process is a requirement.
  • Eligibility for membership in a relevant professional organization is required,
  • Must be able to meet the requirements of site access as dictated by our clients, this may include pre-access drug, alcohol and fitness testing, and
  • possess a valid, non-GDL Class 5 Drivers license.

Other Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge and experience with current provincial and federal legislation and familiarity with the environmental site assessment process.
  • Understanding of the applicable northern guideline documents and/or equivalent documents from other Canadian jurisdictions as required.
  • Understanding of the upstream and downstream oil and gas industry, oil sands industry, northern mining and/or commercial/industrial/brownfields environmental industry.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of MS Office Suite.
  • Be able to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Ability to work either independently or as a part of a team interacting with other team members and contractors.
  • Able to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic; and
  • Excellent safety attitude.

Working Conditions:

  • Office environment that requires sitting for extended periods of time, as well as occasional field work.
  • Prolonged exposure to computer keyboards and computer screens.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Sometimes requires long hours of work. Occasional interruptions outside work hours and travel to other locations are required.
