Overview
The Senior Engineer, Naval Architecture – Concept Design, is responsible for completing naval architecture activities within the Concept Design team at Seaspan Shipyards. Under the direction of the Director – Concept Design, the Senior Engineer, Naval Architecture participates in the development of new concept designs, including hull form development, stability, powering & resistance, and hydrodynamic analyses.
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.
Responsibilities
- Provides engineering and design expertise in assigned areas of Naval Architecture by preparing and reviewing design and calculation packages to ensure design requirements are met.
- Designs and optimizes ship hull forms and general arrangements.
- Collaborate with the mechanical and electrical engineers on developing power and propulsion architecture.
- Performs Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyses for optimizing hull appendages and propulsion arrangements.
- Provides mentorship and guidance to other junior engineers, designers or subcontractors in the areas of naval architecture and structural design.
- Develops and / or reviews design documents for fisheries, icebreaking and naval vessels in order to achieve customer, Classification Society and regulatory approval.
- Performs trade studies both formal and informal to determine the most cost-effective solutions to engineering problems and meet material budgets for systems assigned. Identifies opportunities to reduce material costs below budget.
- Represents the company to industry to develop understanding of Seaspan’s involvement in the National Shipbuilding Strategy and continue to build our reputation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Naval Architecture is required.
- 8 or more years’ post-secondary experience working in Naval Architecture.
- Previous concept design experience is an asset.
- Experience with CFD tools is an asset.
- Experience working with a diverse integrated project team is considered an asset.
- Professional Engineering designation in the Province of British Columbia.
