Job summary

Kinectrics is seeking a Senior Engineer/Scientist (Mechanical/Piping Design) for permanent roles in the Toronto/Pickering area. You will lead piping and mechanical design work for nuclear projects, interfacing with construction and procurement, and providing field engineering support.

The role requires 8+ years of experience in mechanical/piping design, a Mechanical Engineering degree, and familiarity with CANDU codes. A strong asset is nuclear refurbishment/new build experience; P.Eng.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in mechanical/piping design.
  • Nuclear refurbishment or Nuclear New Build experience is a strong asset.
  • Experience in a project-driven environment with ability to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical engineering analysis and design for Candu nuclear power stations.
  • Interface with construction/procurement partners and utility stakeholders across the project lifecycle.
  • Provide field support for plant design modifications and field engineering.
  • Understand client problems and determine appropriate solutions.
  • Conduct technical assessments and support refurbishment and capital projects.
  • Interface with multi-disciplinary staff and stay current with field developments.

Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

The Piping and Mechanical Design Sections of the Mechanical and Civil Engineering Department are currently growing to respond to the needs of our nuclear portfolio including OPG, Bruce Power, New Brunswick Power and Cernavoda, among others. We are looking for highly motivated engineers to:

  • Perform Mechanical engineering analysis and design for Candu nuclear power stations.
  • Interface with construction/procurement partners and utility stakeholders, throughout the lifecycle of the design project (i.e., from preliminary and conceptual engineering to detailed design, implementation and close-out) to provide practical and effective solutions as per requirements.
  • Provide field support to multi-disciplined plant design modifications, including provision of field engineering.
  • Understand and assess client problems and determine appropriate means of solution.
  • Conduct technical assessments and emergent troubleshooting/engineering to support refurbishment projects and operating unit (capital) projects.
  • Interface effectively with other staff on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Stay current with developments within their field of expertise.
  • Other duties as assigned.
What You Need to Succeed
  • A Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) is required
  • Nuclear Refurbishment experience or Nuclear New Build experience will be considered a strong asset
  • 8+ years of relevant experience is required
  • Must have experience in a project driven environment with the capability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, and within project constraints (time, cost, quality).
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize assigned work and to coordinate multiple activities efficiently
  • Must have a strong attention to detail and to quality assurance requirements
  • Demonstrated experience in preparation of reports, proposals, recommendations and presentations for internal and external clients.
  • Good time management skills and demonstrated capability to interface effectively with and gain the trust of station customers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CANDU technology, strong understanding of nuclear power plant design and operation. Experience with CANDU and C6 refurbishment specifically Feeder and Fuel Channel replacement is considered an asset.
  • General knowledge of emerging SMRs, BWRs/PWRs and advanced reactors is considered an asset.
  • Mechanical engineering activities including:
    • Piping and process systems design, including preparation of system design specification, flow diagrams, piping isometric drawings
    • Vendor-interface and preparation of equipment & component specifications to facilitate procurement including selection of nuclear (Class 1/2/3) and conventional (Class 6) valves, flanges, fittings, pumps and heat exchangers.
    • Design assistance with technical evaluations, independent third-party reviews, design walkdowns, system hydraulic calculations, thermal calculations, component sizing calculations and HVAC flow balance calculations.
    • Nuclear component and assembly design employing GD&T practices, 3D modeling tools such as SolidWorks, and best construction practices.
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards including but not limited to CSA N285, ASME Section III, Section VIII and B31.1. ASME Section III Appendix XXIII qualification is considered an asset.
  • Experience in buried and aboveground piping design including with the application of innovative trenchless pipe rehabilitation methods (SIPP, CIPP, robotic repair) is also considered a strong asset.
  • Experience in the use of piping and numerical analysis software such as AutoPipe, PIPESTRESS, CAESAR II, ANSYS (CFD & FEA) is considered a strong asset.
  • Knowledge and implementation of client Engineering Change Control.
  • Working knowledge of Nuclear Quality Assurance Standards such as N299 and CSA N286
  • Candidates are expected to have or to pursue attainment of the P.Eng. designation.
