Job summary

Teck Resources Limited, Highland Valley Copper operations, is seeking a Senior Engineer, Dam Safety (Tailings) to oversee safety-focused design, governance and operation of tailings facilities. The role reports to the Chief Engineer, Dam Safety and works with internal teams, consultants and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Mining Eng or equivalent
• P.Eng. with EGBC or eligible for registration
• Minimum 8 years in geotechnical engineering, dam safety and tailings management; mining tailings experience is a plus
• Experience managing engineering consultants and coordinating multidisciplinary resources
• Strong ability to read, interpret and apply technical engineering principles, documents, specs and drawings
• Proficiency with MS Office and geotechnical software such as Maximo, AutoCAD, Muk3D
• Valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

• Be a courageous safety leader by sponsoring safety and environmental rules and conducting VFL field visits
• Develop strong relationships with management, technical and operations teams
• Support site compliance with Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines and Water Sustainability Act Dam Safety Regulation
• Ensure conformance with tailings standards (TSM AAA, GISTM)
• Lead internal resources and external engineers, providing technical oversight
• Develop annual and multi-year plans, budgets, schedules and forecasts
• Maintain OMS manuals, Emergency Plans and risk documentation
• Lead project execution across geotechnical, dam safety, instrumentation, tailings governance
• Ensure projects meet plans, specs, schedules and regulatory requirements

Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operations is Canada’s largest open-pit copper mine and molybdenum operation. HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding and flotation.

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, Dam Safety, the Senior Engineer, Dam Safety (Tailings) supports the safe and responsible stewardship of tailings and water storage facilities at the Highland Valley Copper operations (HVC), the largest Canadian open pit copper mine. There are more than thirty dams at HVC, including one of the largest cyclone sand dams in North America, making this position exciting and of critical importance for Teck!

The Highland Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is undergoing a major expansion for the Mine Life Extension project, and this key role will support the Dam Safety team to ensure that capacity is maintained to support operations. The Senior Engineer, Dam Safety will liaise closely with the Engineer of Record team, Dam Construction and Operations personnel and other key internal and external stakeholders, community members and consultants to drive high performance and maintain the HVC Dam Safety team as a recognized center of excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Be a courageous safety leader by adhering to and sponsoring safety and environmental rules and procedures and conducting regular Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) field visits.
• Develop and maintain strong working relationships with management, technical, and operational teams. Collaborate with the Teck Center to ensure effective communication, site visibility, and implementation of applicable standards and guidance.
• Support site compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, including the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in British Columbia and the Water Sustainability Act Dam Safety Regulation.
• Support site conformance with external tailings management standards, including the Mining Association of Canada’s Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Level AAA requirements and the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).
• Lead and coordinate internal resources and external engineering consultants, providing technical oversight and ensuring work is completed safely, effectively, and in alignment with site requirements.
• Participate in the development of annual and multi-year plans, budgets, schedules, and forecasts aligned with mid- and long-term tailings management objectives, ensuring accurate cost projections and alignment with operational and strategic priorities.
• Develop, update, and maintain key tailings management documentation, including Operation, Maintenance and Surveillance (OMS) manuals, Emergency Preparedness and Response Plans, and risk management documentation.
• Lead and support project execution across geotechnical engineering, dam safety, dam surveillance and instrumentation, and tailings governance scopes.
• Ensure short- and long-term dam safety and tailings management projects meet operational needs and are delivered according to approved plans, specifications, schedules, budgets, applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Support the implementation and continuous improvement of tailings governance systems and processes.
• Plan, coordinate, and execute public engagement and disclosure related to tailings in collaboration with the Community & Indigenous Relations department.
• Prepare and communicate technical information, project updates, risks, and recommendations to senior stakeholders, including the Accountable Executive and Tailings Review Board.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil, Geological/Geotechnical, Mining Engineering, or an equivalent discipline.
• Registered, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).
• Minimum 8 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, dam safety, and tailings management. Experience in a mining or tailings operating environment, particularly in an owner’s organization, is considered an asset.
• Demonstrated experience managing engineering consultants and coordinating multidisciplinary technical resources.
• Strong ability to read, interpret, and apply technical engineering principles, documents, specifications, and drawings.
• Working knowledge of project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and cost management principles.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience with relevant engineering and asset management software such as Maximo, AutoCAD, Muk3D, and geotechnical applications.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information effectively to a range of stakeholders.
• Valid driver’s license.

Pay Range

CAD $122,000 - $150,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.

Working Conditions

• Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.
• Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
