Job summary

Vale Base Metals is seeking a Senior Mine Engineer for the Voisey’s Bay mine site in Labrador. The role is on-site with a 2 week on/2 week off schedule, focusing on rolling 24‑month planning used to drive budgets and long‑term strategy.

You will lead mine planning, coordinate with engineering and operations, and mentor junior staff while ensuring schedules reflect development plans and safety standards. A mining engineering degree and P.Eng are required.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Mining Engineering is required.
  • P.Eng designation is required.
  • Minimum 4+ years in underground/open pit mining or similar environment.
  • Experience with budgeting, 5-year plans, and capital planning.

Responsibilities

  • Create a rolling 24‑month plan used to generate the mine budget and 5‑year plan.
  • Plan capital and operating requirements, scheduling and forecasting over 24 months.
  • Develop operations plans for stoping and development in months 0‑24 with increasing detail.
  • Adjust schedules to reflect latest development plans and variances.
  • Mentor junior staff in the Mine Planning group and support cross-functional work.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Mine Engineer to join our Mines Technical Services (MTS) team in Voisey’s Bay, Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation.

The role is a permanent on-site position, working a 2 week on/2 week off schedule.

As a Senior Mine Engineer, you will be responsible to create the rolling 24-month plan at the Voisey’s Bay mine site, which is used to generate the mine budget, the mine’s 5-year plan and to make strategic decisions for an open pit and underground mine operation. The incumbent will work collaboratively with their peers in the Engineering Team and cross functionally with all other areas of the operation complete tasks in their area of accountability.

Additionally, in this position, you will:

  • Compile information and plan capital and operating requirements, scheduling and forecasting in a rolling 24-month period, integrating guidance from Integrated Business Planning, Operations, Reliability, Geology including diamond drilling, Ground Control, Seismic Risk Management, and Ventilation.
  • Maintain clear and open communication with Senior Mine Engineer – Mine Design, as the Mine Planning schedule is the take-off point for updates to the Life of Mine Plan schedule.
  • Be responsible to create operations plans for stoping and development in months 0-24 with increasing details as the tasks move towards month 4 for handover to Integrated Operations Scheduling team.
  • Be accountable to ensure required changes to stoping and development plans, due to execution variances or other unforeseen changes, are immediately assessed and put into the plan.
  • Be responsible for generating the key drivers for the creation of the operating budget, based on company strategic guidance.
  • Participate in monthly deviation analysis process, when the deviation analysis points to a corrective action required in the planning work.
  • Adjust operations schedules to reflect latest development plans and stoping information.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of Mines Technical Services procedures.
  • Act as designate to Chief Mine Engineer when Chief Mine Engineer is absent.
  • Train and mentor less experienced personnel in the Mine Planning group and direct them in their upcoming task priorities.

About You
Education
  • An Undergraduate Degree in Mining Engineering is required.
  • P. Eng. designation is required.
Experience
  • 4+ years’ relevant experience in a similar role within an underground mining or open pit mining environment.
  • Experience in assisting with preparation of annual budgets, 5-year plans, capital planning and allocation of resources.
  • Experience with mine production and development planning.
  • Experience with MS Office, Deswik and SAP.
Skills
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of OH&S Act and Health, Safety and Environment management systems.
  • Knowledge of cash flow modeling techniques and mineral economics is an asset.
