Job description

About Remote Robotic Systems

Help build the next generation of uncrewed aircraft operating at the intersection of aerospace, robotics, and defence technology. Remote Robotic Systems (RRS) is a Canadian robotics and defence-tech company helping organizations deploy enterprise-grade drones, uncrewed aircraft, robotic platforms, sensors, payloads, and remote operations technologies for mission‑critical applications. Our solutions support customers across defence, public safety, security, industrial, infrastructure, energy, and government sectors.

Through our Airmetal team, we are developing advanced uncrewed aircraft systems designed to operate where most aircraft can’t: extreme cold, icing, wind, and remote locations with no runway, no hangar, and no second chances.

We’re a small, fast‑moving engineering team that values ownership, technical depth, practical problem solving, and the ability to turn ambitious ideas into working hardware.

The Role

Airmetal is looking for a Senior Electromechanical Engineer to own the aircraft’s moving and powered subsystems, from actuation and controls to propulsion integration, thermal management, de‑icing, and field deployment systems.

This is a broad, senior role that sits at the intersection of mechanical, electrical, and embedded systems engineering. You’ll design, prototype, integrate, test, and validate critical electromechanical subsystems, ensuring they perform reliably in demanding real‑world environments.

Working closely with the broader engineering team, you’ll help solve challenges related to aircraft deployment, launch, propulsion integration, environmental survivability, and field operations. You’ll be expected to move comfortably between design reviews, hardware development, testing, troubleshooting, and field trials.

We’re looking for someone with strong technical fundamentals, a systems‑level mindset, and a passion for building hardware that works reliably when conditions are far from ideal.

What You Will Work On
Electromechanical Systems
  • Design and integrate actuation systems, linkages, and control hardware from concept through flight‑ready deployment.
  • Support propulsion system integration, including mounting structures, vibration management, cooling, airflow, and system interfaces.
  • Design thermal management, heating, and de‑icing solutions for batteries, electronics, actuators, and critical aircraft systems.
  • Engineer systems to operate reliably in cold weather, moisture, icing, dust, vibration, and other harsh environmental conditions.
  • Support integration across mechanical, electrical, embedded, and avionics systems.
Deployment & Launch Systems
  • Design systems for transport, field deployment, assembly, and operation by small crews in remote environments.
  • Develop and validate launch and deployment mechanisms that support aircraft operations without conventional infrastructure.
  • Drive part‑count reduction, assembly improvements, and design simplification initiatives.
  • Support field testing and deployment activities, ensuring hardware performs as intended under real‑world conditions.
Testing & Validation
  • Define and execute test programs for electromechanical subsystems, including bench, chamber, and field testing.
  • Analyze test data and translate findings into design improvements.
  • Troubleshoot issues across mechanical, electrical, and embedded domains.
  • Support reliability, environmental qualification, and future certification activities as products continue to mature.
Core Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Several years of hands‑on electromechanical, mechatronics, or systems integration experience in demanding hardware environments.
  • Experience working on complex hardware systems in industries such as UAVs, aerospace, robotics, automotive, defence, or industrial automation.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design, actuation systems, controls, and electrical integration.
  • Proven ability to take systems from concept through prototyping, testing, and field deployment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Comfortable working in ambiguity and helping define as well as solve engineering problems.
  • Able to work on‑site in Kanata, Ontario.
Nice to Have
  • Experience designing for extreme environments including cold weather, icing, marine environments, or remote operations.
  • Experience with propulsion systems, thermal management systems, launch mechanisms, or deployment systems.
  • UAV, aerospace, robotics, or autonomous systems experience.
  • Flight‑test, field‑trial, or outdoor product validation experience.
  • Familiarity with environmental qualification standards such as DO‑160 or MIL‑STD‑810.
  • Experience working with lithium battery systems and power management technologies.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar CAD tools.
  • P.Eng. designation or eligibility for licensure in Ontario.
What Will Make You Successful
  • You enjoy solving complex problems that span mechanical, electrical, and software boundaries.
  • You trust testing and measured performance over assumptions.
  • You are comfortable moving between CAD, the lab, and the field.
  • You take ownership of outcomes and follow through on commitments.
  • You collaborate effectively across disciplines and help teams solve problems together.
  • You can balance technical depth with practical engineering judgement.
What We Offer
  • The opportunity to own critical systems on an advanced aircraft platform.
  • Direct impact on aircraft reliability, field deployment, and operational performance.
  • Exposure to actuation systems, propulsion, thermal management, autonomy, robotics, and aerospace technologies.
  • Hands‑on involvement in design, testing, integration, and field operations.
  • Close collaboration within a highly technical, multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • A fast‑paced, highly collaborative environment where your work has a visible impact.
  • Competitive compensation, benefits, and equity participation.
