Job description

Are you a senior professional engineer with deep expertise in high-voltage substation equipment design and technical leadership? Juno Engineering Canada Inc. is seeking a Senior Electrical Substation Engineer to lead the design and delivery of utility, renewable energy, power generation, and industrial substation projects across Western Canada.

About the Role

This position is responsible for leading the physical design of greenfield and brownfield substations, switching stations, and grid interconnections. The role includes design-basis development, major-equipment engineering, technical calculations, multidisciplinary integration, design review and authentication, procurement support, and construction and commissioning support.

In this role, you’ll serve as a technical lead and trusted client advisor, guiding project teams from concept and FEED through detailed design, construction, energization, and closeout while maintaining control of quality, scope, schedule, and technical risk.

At Juno, we empower our team to drive sustainable progress across power generation, renewable energy, and advanced industrial projects. With over 40 years of engineering excellence, we foster a collaborative, forward-thinking culture where your leadership in substation engineering will help shape Canada’s future power infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
Substation Design and Technical Leadership
  • Lead concept, FEED, and detailed physical design for greenfield and brownfield substations, switching stations, and utility or generation interconnections.
  • Establish design bases and technical criteria and perform or review calculations for electrical clearances, bus and conductor ampacity, grounding, lightning shielding, insulation coordination, cable ampacity, and auxiliary systems.
  • Select and optimize AIS or GIS arrangements, equipment configurations, bus schemes, cable-routing concepts, station service, and constructability solutions.
  • Define required power-system studies and lead the application of load-flow, short-circuit, arc-flash, grounding, protection-coordination, and insulation-coordination results to equipment selection, ratings, physical design, constructability, and operating requirements.
Equipment Engineering and Procurement
  • Lead specifications, technical evaluations, and vendor interfaces for transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, instrument transformers, surge arresters, GIS or AIS equipment, bus systems, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Provide technical recommendations, review vendor drawings and calculations, resolve equipment interfaces, and support factory acceptance testing and procurement risk management.
  • Confirm continuous-current and interrupting ratings, short-circuit and switching duty, transient recovery voltage requirements, insulation level/BIL, creepage distance, electrical clearances, terminal loading, seismic qualification, environmental service conditions, and interfaces with protection and control systems.
Project Delivery and Client Coordination
  • Define engineering scope, deliverables, estimates, schedules, resource requirements, design-review plans, and execution strategies.
  • Lead multidisciplinary coordination with power-systems, protection and controls, SCADA and telecommunications, civil, structural, project-management, client, utility, and vendor teams.
  • Lead coordination of electrical requirements and interfaces for equipment foundations, transformer oil containment, grading and drainage, roads, fencing, control buildings and E-houses, cable trenches, structural steel, underground services, grounding connections, and construction sequencing.
  • Maintain visibility of project budget, schedule, technical risk, and change; provide clear status reporting and timely escalation to project and management teams.
  • Support proposals, client presentations, scope development, and the growth of long-term utility and energy-sector relationships.
Construction, Commissioning, and Closeout
  • Provide senior technical support during procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, outages, and energization, including resolution of RFIs and field changes.
  • Conduct site reviews, lead technical issue resolution, and oversee record drawings, as-built documentation, deficiency closeout, and lessons learned.
Quality, Safety, and Team Leadership
  • Authenticate engineering deliverables within professional competency and ensure designs comply with the Canadian Electrical Code where applicable; relevant CSA C22.3, IEEE, IEC, and ANSI standards; applicable provincial, utility, client, and interconnection requirements; and Juno’s engineering quality-management system.
  • Apply safety-in-design, constructability, maintainability, and lifecycle-risk principles and lead disciplined independent and interdisciplinary reviews.
  • Mentor engineers and designers, develop technical standards and tools, and foster consistent engineering practices across the substation team.
