Job summary

Government of Alberta is seeking up to three Digital Architects to drive service innovation and digital transformation across the GoA. The role involves leading architecture for digital services, supporting cross-functional product teams, and aligning with citizen-centered design and Agile methods.

Remote within Canada with occasional travel to Alberta (Edmonton) for meetings and workshops. Initial 3-month contract with extension possibilities up to 24 months; flexible work arrangements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field with equivalencies.
  • 5+ years leading cross-functional Agile product teams and providing architectural direction.
  • 5+ years in software architecture and enterprise-scale delivery.
  • 2+ years collaborating with UX or Human-Centered Design teams.
  • 4+ years defining solution architecture for large-scale systems and cloud-native solutions.
  • 5+ years communicating technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead solution architecture for digital services across GoA teams.
  • Develop architectural plans aligned with citizen-centered design and Agile delivery.
  • Analyze existing systems and define future-state architecture.
  • Provide technical discovery, prototypes and feasibility recommendations.
  • Design scalable, iterative, cloud-native solutions.
  • Identify integration strategies, system boundaries and reusable components.
  • Review code changes and contribute to development when required.
  • Guide developers, tech leads, Product Owners and cross-functional teams.
  • Assess architectural risks and impacts; support legacy modernization.
  • Develop architecture docs, diagrams, and technical materials.
  • Establish and improve architecture principles, standards and metrics.
  • Collaborate with UX, Service Design, Design Thinking, and Human-Centered Design teams.
  • Support continuous improvement of the GoA architecture practice.

Digital Architect – Government of Alberta

Client: Government of Alberta – Technology and Innovation

Division: Digital Design & Delivery (3D)

Role: Digital Architect

Positions: Up to 3

Location: Primarily Remote – Canada

Travel: May be required to attend meetings/work sessions in Alberta, including Edmonton

Hours: 7.25 hours/day, 36.25 hours/week

Maximum Hours: 1,960 hours per term unless otherwise approved

Initial Contract: 3 months

Extension: Up to 24 months

Work Arrangement: Remote within Canada

Project Overview

The Government of Alberta requires up to three Digital Architects to support service innovation, program review, and digital transformation initiatives across the Government of Alberta.

The Digital Architect will work with cross-functional product teams led by GoA Product Owners, supporting activities such as:

  • Solution and software architecture
  • Technical discovery and feasibility
  • System modernization and integration
  • Backlog refinement and sprint planning
  • Architecture standards and governance
  • Technical leadership and developer mentorship
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead solution architecture for digital services.
  • Develop architectural plans aligned with citizen-centered design and Agile delivery.
  • Analyze existing systems and define future-state architecture.
  • Provide technical discovery, prototypes, and feasibility recommendations.

Mandatory Qualifications

Requirement

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field; equivalencies considered

Leading cross-functional Agile product teams, providing architectural direction and mentoring developers/technical leads

Nice-to-Have Qualifications
  • Secure development practices, RBAC/ABAC, and Zero Trust Architecture – 4+ years
  • API design and management, including RESTful services and integrations – 4+ years
  • CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, deployment, and observability – 2+ years
  • Legacy system modernization into modern digital services – 5+ years
  • Containerization, orchestration, and Infrastructure-as-Code – 2+ years
  • Relational and non-relational databases, schema design, and performance optimization – 2+ years
  • Public-sector digital service frameworks or enterprise architecture standards – 4+ years
Mandatory Project Experience

Each project should cover:

  • Project Overview – scope, objectives, and candidate's Digital Architect responsibilities.
  • Sector Context – public or private sector; public-sector experience preferred.
  • Project Complexity & Scope – systems, users/departments, modernization, cloud migration, releases, team size, security/compliance, etc.
  • Delivery Approach – architecture, Agile/DevSecOps, development, QA, risk mitigation, communication, and enterprise standards.

Recent projects and public-sector digital transformation experience will be evaluated more favorably
