Summarized Position Responsibilities

The Senior Development Engineering Technologist is responsible for providing technical reviews and assessments of complex land use applications, including subdivisions, zoning amendments, development and building permits, ensuring compliance with City regulations, policies, and Provincial legislation. This role acts as a technical expert on engineering reports, studies, and drawings, evaluates existing infrastructure conditions, and prepares servicing agreements for development projects. The position involves coordinating approvals with internal departments and external agencies, offering recommendations to the Approving Officer, and delivering efficient servicing reviews. Additional duties include supervising municipal infrastructure construction, training and guiding team members, resolving conflicts, and responding to inquiries from developers and consultants. The technologist applies broad engineering knowledge to assess alternative solutions, provides expertise to committees and Council, ensures adherence to safety regulations, and supports onboarding of new staff while performing other related tasks as required.

Our Ideal Candidate
  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A member of, or eligibility for, full membership in, the Applied Science Technologist and Technicians Association of BC as an AScT
  • 7 years related experience in subdivision design and approval, BC Building Code, municipal engineering, and infrastructure associated with land development
  • Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel),
  • Development Services software and GIS Systems, etc.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude, and exercise tact and diplomacy to maintain good internal / external working relationships
  • Strong customer services skills and the ability to communicate established policies and procedures with tact and discretion, especially in verbal conflict situations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good organizational skills, with the ability to plan and prioritize effectively
  • Ability to analyze and solve complex and challenging engineering issues, strategize options, form solutions, mitigate risks and make effective decisions using a high degree of judgment
  • Extensive knowledge of municipal engineering practices, methods, and design
