Job description

Ballard Power Systems, Inc. is a leading global provider of innovative clean energy solutions, providing clean energy fuel cell products that enable optimized power systems for a range of applications. Ballard is an international public company traded on both the NASDAQ and TSX.

The Ballard Finance Team has an opportunity for a Senior Corporate Accountant to be a key member of its Finance Team, assisting in its financial reporting requirements at the corporate head office in Burnaby. The position reports to the Manager, Corporate Reporting and has the following responsibilities and requirements :

Responsibilities
  • Performing month-end close procedures, including preparing journal entries, monthly account reconciliations, and accounting analysis including intercompany transactions for the corporate head office and wholly owned subsidiaries
  • Compiling and preparing monthly consolidated results, and supporting the preparation of quarterly & annual external financial statements (including note disclosures) and Management’s Discussion & Analysis (“MD&A”), and other publicly disclosed documents
  • Completing detailed financial analysis of financial statement accounts (including detailed variance analysis on a quarterly basis)
  • Maintaining equity-related working papers and involvement in related financings
  • Ensure internal controls for responsible areas are performed in compliance with Sarbanes Oxley (“SOX”)
  • Compiling and analysing data to support financial analysis and reporting
  • Preparing memos for various accounting treatments (including revenue recognition)
  • Supporting the preparation of tax returns and tax provisions for wholly owned subsidiaries
  • Opportunities to work on other ad hoc and special projects, as needed
Requirements
  • The ideal candidate demonstrates excellent analytical skills, which are grounded in a strong understanding of technical accounting concepts, and can adapt in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and advanced Excel skills will round out the successful candidate.
  • Has obtained professional accounting designation (CPA)
  • 5-8 years working experience in accounting
  • Public company reporting and experience with multi-currency companies is preferable
  • Excellent analytical abilities, high attention to detail, and ability to identify and resolve issues in a timely manner
  • Takes ownership and is results oriented, with a focus on quality
  • Strong technical accounting skills with the ability to connect accounting concepts to processes and daily transactions
  • Strong software skills with both accounting systems and the Microsoft suite of products. Advanced Excel skills required. Experience with Oracle ERP is an asset.
  • Ability to multi-task with effective time management and organizational skills are critical
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Team player and customer service oriented

The typical hiring range for this position is $75,000 - $93,800. Ballard considers many factors in determining total compensation, including the successful Candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, experience, position location, and internal equity.
