Job description

Overview

The Controls and Automation Engineer provides leadership, operational support, and project support to the plant’s Maintenance & Engineering teams. This position is responsible for designing, programming, repairing, and maintaining programmable logic controller (PLC) systems, automation devices, controls components, and overall electrical equipment used within PepsiCo facilities. This position also provides support to improve productivity and operating performance in the critical areas of health and safety, quality, production, cost, service, employee engagement, and other people/leadership objectives through the use of continuous improvement methodologies. This role and person should be recognized and accessed by the people in the plant as the key resource expert in the area. The role also provides a technical point of contact for the site to coach and develop technicians and lead the site’s controls agenda. The controls lead is an active member of the Engineering and Maintenance management team.

Total Compensation: $75,300 - $122,760

Responsibilities
  • Apply reliability expertise to stabilize and improve the operation, driving variation down and seeking improved TE through capital, procedural, and operational improvements
  • Perform preventative maintenance, program, troubleshoot, and perform repairs on PLC systems, automation devices, controls components, and overall electrical equipment
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions and make more complicated repairs or adjustments as needed; may perform preventative maintenance duties per manufacturer’s specifications
  • Manage major OHs on substations, line upgrades, etc.
  • Communicate and collaborate cross-functionally to assist teams to solve operational issues; motivate team members across all departments to achieve plant and PBNA goals
  • Ensure controls related work orders are scheduled and completed in a timely manner
  • Perform breakdown analysis on electrical failures
  • Plan, schedule, and execute projects, ensuring timely completion with minimal production disruption; assist in the development, installation and commissioning of OPEX and Capital Projects
  • Support development of annual operating plan, yield improvement plans, and fixed budgets
  • Assist in plant initiatives and direct line supervision as needed
  • Required to work off‑shift and weekends as needed to support projects and regular operations
  • Direct activities of outside contractors working on assigned work
  • Work independently under limited supervision (self‑management)
  • Understand and support maintenance, repair and improvement of thermal processing equipment including heat exchangers, heat recovery systems and CIP systems
  • Own and manage various OT software and plant data systems such as ZPI, MARS, Colos, ThinManager, WonderWare, Aveva, etc.
  • Lead, manage, coach and train others electricians on automation, electric, and controls equipment; create and implement controls related training for the site
  • Demonstrate good oral and written communication skills through leading meetings, facilitating meetings, and preparing and administering written plant communications
  • Develop yourself and your team to solve and manage day‑to‑day operational issues and reach short‑term and long‑term performance and career goals
  • Manage PLC log‑book and ensure all 309A electricians follow process; ensure RCAs are completed on any PLC changes
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; preferably in engineering, business, operations management, or a similar field—technical background preferred
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a maintenance group troubleshooting field control issues with strong demonstrated competency
  • Lean Six Sigma experience preferred, demonstrated by successful completion of major continuous improvement projects
  • Industrial utility systems knowledge a plus
  • Strong working knowledge of controls and electrical engineering/maintenance processes
  • Proficiency in Allen Bradley PLC5, 500 and Control Logix
  • Solid understanding of motor control and VFD operations
  • Experience with category III and IV safety circuits
  • Experience with different communication protocols: DH+, Ethernet, Profibus, DeviceNET
  • Proficiency in Wonderware, FactoryTalk View, RSView software
  • Solid understanding of servers and databases to support IT/Server Room
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite applications
  • Must be self‑motivated, results and action oriented
  • Ability to make independent and sound decisions
  • Ability to conduct assessments and audits and evaluate to measure progress
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback
  • Ability to lead a team‑based approach to decision making
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a results‑oriented, challenging environment
  • Strong leadership with ability to get results through mentoring others
  • Off‑shift or weekend shift support may be required
