Job summary

Create Talent Group is seeking a Senior Online Backend Engineer to lead server tech for our client’s Unreal Engine powered titles in a Vancouver, Canada setting.

You will own game-to-cloud integrations, implement scalable networked features, and collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to ship live services such as matchmaking, inventories, and persistent stats.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years in online backends or networked software architecture.
  • Advanced mastery of Unreal Engine architecture (UE5 ideal).
  • Expert-level C++ in real-time game engines.
  • Hands-on with cloud multiplayer frameworks (PlayFab, Pragma, or custom backend stacks).
  • Familiar with web development tools and server environments (Node.js, TypeScript, RESTful/OpenAPI).
  • Experience deploying online features to live games (matchmaking queues, inventory, persistent stats).
  • Strong self-direction and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Own and maintain game-to-cloud server integrations within Unreal Engine.
  • Implement and refine networked platform SDKs with modern Web/API standards.
  • Develop online multiplayer services including hybrid lobby setups and cloud servers.
  • Manage data persistence for player profiles, items, and progression.
  • Support live-ops features, metrics, and event-based gameplay changes.
  • Coordinate with UI engineers to align server logic with HUD/menus.
  • Map data schemas, payloads, and cloud logic with systems designers.
  • Troubleshoot performance bottlenecks across client and server stacks.
  • Create clear technical documentation on server workflows and architectures.

Core Duties
  • Technical ownership and ongoing maintenance of game-to-cloud server integrations built within Unreal Engine.
  • Implementation and refinement of networked platform SDKs, leveraging modern Web/API standards and strongly-typed scripts.
  • Development of online multiplayer services, including:
  • Hybrid lobby setups (managing dedicated cloud servers alongside direct host/P2P connections).
  • Data persistence pipelines for player account profiles, unlocked items, and progression tracks.
  • Live-ops gameplay features such as player metrics, inventory databases, and timed operational events.
  • Collaboration with interface engineers to ensure smooth synchronization between online microservices and player HUD/menus.
  • Technical alignment with systems designers to map out data schema, server payload structures, and cloud logic.
  • Diagnostic troubleshooting across the complete stack, resolving performance bottlenecks between client builds and remote services.
  • Creation of clear technical documentation covering server workflows, network logic, and subsystem architectures.
Required Experience
  • 8+ years working professionally in online backends or networked software architecture.
  • Advanced mastery of Unreal Engine architecture (UE5 familiarity ideal).
  • Expert-level proficiency in C++ programming within real-time game engine environments.
  • Hands-on background with cloud multiplayer frameworks (e.g., PlayFab, Pragma, or custom backend stacks).
  • Proven familiarity with web development tools and server environments (Node.js, TypeScript, RESTful/OpenAPI interfaces).
  • Demonstrated success deploying online features directly to live games (e.g., matchmaking queues, inventory tracking, persistent stats).
  • Strong interpersonal skills: Highly self-directed, articulate, and skilled at working within cross-disciplinary teams.
