Job description

Senior Back-End Developer

(This role is open to hybrid candidates in Montreal/Ottawa only)

Successful candidates for this position will be expected to participate in a rotational on-call schedule and able to obtain Canadian government security clearance.

GHGSat offers greenhouse gas detection, measurement, and monitoring services to industrial and government customers around the world. We use our own satellites and aircraft sensors, combined with third-party data, to help industrial emitters better understand, control, and reduce their emissions.

GHGSat’s capability is unique: The company provides high-resolution, local measurements of atmospheric methane and carbon dioxide concentration from space. This further provides the company with a means to detect greenhouse gas emitters and to visualize and quantify their emissions.

You will join the Operations Systems team as a Back End developer. The Operations System team’s mandate is to design and deploy software systems that process, manage, and store emissions related data. The team operates using Agile Scrum methodology. Tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in relevant roles
  • Strong computational science or software development skills
  • Proven capability with: Linux, Python, Docker
  • Experience with Cloud-based services (AWS)
  • Competence with databases (PostgreSQL)
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal direction

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and monitor satellite and aircraft data processing pipelines
  • Develop, test, integrate, and deploy backend software to our cloud-based environments
  • Monitor production systems and applications to ensure high availability and performance
  • Analyze data collected with our remote sensing instruments
  • Assist stakeholders with the implementation and the documentation of new tools
  • Liaise with Operators, Developers, Designers, QA and Product Managers to identify and define new features

Assets:

  • Experience using software development tools such as Git version control and Docker
  • Interest in scientific analysis, atmospheric sciences, remote sensing and space technology
  • Experience with Geographical Information Systems
  • Experience with Kubernetes
  • Experience with deployment using Argo Workflows
  • Familiar with the Scrum Agile Framework
