Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to join our Protection & Control team in Canada. You will lead automation design for high-voltage substations, mentoring junior engineers and guiding projects from concept through commissioning.

You will own technical work on projects ranging from 12 kV to 500 kV, develop automation philosophies, review RTU/PLC/HMI/SCADA configurations, and participate in FAT, SAT, and client meetings with a strong emphasis on safety and constructability.

Qualifications

• 8-15 years of utility automation, protection, control, and metering engineering experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university.
• Eligibility for (or current) Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration in Canada.
• Experience with utility automation systems including SCADA, RTUs, PLCs, HMIs, telemetry systems, and substation communications.
• Working knowledge of utility communications protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850.
• Experience reviewing and developing automation design deliverables including: logic diagrams, RTU and PLC configurations, communications architecture drawings, One-lines, schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams.
• Familiarity with integrating automation systems into high-voltage transmission and distribution substations.
• Practical knowledge of substation construction, commissioning, and outage planning.
• Experience supporting system testing, troubleshooting, and field commissioning activities.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience on EPC projects, and familiarity with utility maintenance and operational practices, are considered strong assets

Responsibilities

• Serve as Technical Lead on assigned projects, guiding automation designs from conceptual planning through construction and commissioning
• Develop and review automation philosophies and application documents
