Job summary

Canadian Solar in Kitchener, Ontario, is seeking a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to own the design, development, optimization, and lifecycle support of firmware for ARM-based processors used in grid-tied inverters and energy storage systems.

You will develop real-time firmware in C/C++, implement BSPs, bootloaders, device drivers, and ensure compliance with grid standards. Collaborate with hardware, controls, and validation teams to ensure high performance and reliability.

Qualifications

  • Educational background in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
  • Proven experience in embedded or real-time control systems.
  • Strong experience with ARM-based processors (Cortex‑M/A) for industrial/power electronics applications.
  • Proficiency in embedded C/C++, real-time programming concepts, and interrupt-driven design.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, design, and implement embedded firmware for ARM-based processors in inverters, power converters, and energy storage subsystems.
  • Develop and maintain real-time firmware in embedded C/C++, including drivers, and applications.
  • Translate system and grid-code requirements into traceable firmware requirements and robust designs.
  • Implement inverter features such as communication, protections, fault handling, diagnostics, and monitoring.
  • Ensure grid-code compliance (UL 1741 SB, IEEE 1547, UL 1998) and coordinate certification testing.

You will play a critical technical role in delivering robust, certifiable, and high‑performance firmware that integrates tightly with power electronics hardware, FPGA/DSP subsystems, and system‑levelResponsibilities:Architect, design, and implement embedded firmware for ARM‑based processors used in inverters, power converters, and energy storage subsystemsDevelop and maintain real‑time firmware in embedded C/C++, including task scheduling, interrupt handling, drivers, and applicationsTranslate system, control, and grid‑code requirements into traceable firmware requirements and robust designsImplement inverter features such as communication, protections, fault handling, diagnostics, and monitoringSupport compliance with grid and firmware standards (UL 1741 SB, IEEE 1547, UL 1998) and certification testing activitiesCollaborate with hardware, controls, systems, and validation teams to ensure system‑level performance and reliabilityDebug complex firmware issues, perform root‑cause analysis, and optimize performance using lab tools and emulatorsParticipate in firmware architecture reviews, code reviews, and technical risk assessmentsMaintain clear firmware documentation and contribute to process improvement and release qualityRequired Qualifications and Skills:Educational background in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related fieldAt least 5 years' of experience in professional firmware development experience in embedded or real‑time control systemsStrong experience developing firmware on ARM‑based processors (e.g., Cortex‑M, Cortex‑A) for industrial or power electronics applicationsProficiency in embedded C/C++, real‑time programming concepts, and interrupt‑driven designAbility to design and maintain board‑support packages (BSP), bootloaders, and device driversSolid understanding of grid‑tied inverter operation, digital control concepts, and protection strategiesWorking knowledge of grid‑code behaviour such as anti‑islanding, ride‑through, and grid support functionse-STORAGE is Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE).
