Job description

A growing SaaS company that builds financial software for the education sector. Its platform handles payments, accounting and reporting for school organizations across North America, giving them real-time oversight of funds collected through cash, cheque and digital channels.

The business operates at real scale and is investing heavily in cloud-native, data-driven engineering. The work spans payments, hardware and backend systems, so the problems are complex.

The Role

This is a senior hands-on engineering role, roughly 70% Android and 30% backend. You’ll build and support the apps that run on the company’s Android point-of-sale terminals. You’ll also help shape the Azure services that monitor, configure and report on those devices in the field. It suits an Android engineer who has worked with physical hardware and wants to own work from the device through to the cloud.

What You Will Do
  • Build and maintain Android applications for POS terminals in Kotlin and Java, using Jetpack, MVVM, Coroutines and Hilt/Dagger
  • Connect apps to card readers, receipt printers, barcode scanners, NFC readers and customer-facing displays, starting with PAX devices and expanding to other Android payment terminals
  • Make payment and operational workflows secure, stable and responsive, and work through production issues across a mix of device models and OS versions
  • Design Azure-based services and APIs for device health, diagnostics, remote configuration and fleet management
  • Build pipelines that bring in metrics, logs, transaction events and connectivity data, and turn them into monitoring, alerts and reporting the platform and data teams can use
What You Bring
  • 8+ years in software engineering, with at least 5 focused on Android using Kotlin, Java, the Android SDK and Jetpack
  • Experience building apps for POS, kiosk, retail or other specialized Android hardware, with solid grounding in MVVM, Clean Architecture, Coroutines and dependency injection
  • Backend experience in C#/.NET, Java/Spring Boot or Node.js, plus REST API integration and SQL/NoSQL databases
  • Hands-on Azure experience, especially Application Insights, alongside services such as Event Hubs, Service Bus, Functions, Cosmos DB, Azure SQL, Storage or AKS
  • Bonus: payment terminals (PAX, Verifone, Ingenico, Castles or Clover), card-present payments, PCI-DSS, Docker, Kubernetes and observability tooling
Why This Role

Your code will process real money on devices used every day across a large network of schools. You’ll own both the terminal software and the cloud services that keep the device fleet running, which few Android roles offer. The company is scaling and investing in its engineering, so there’s real hardware, payments and telemetry work to take on.
