About the job

In this role, you will:

  • Evaluate complex engineering designs and technologies to ensure air emissions meet environmental standards and protect public health.
  • Apply Ontario's environmental laws and policies to approve or reject proposals and set enforceable conditions for compliance.
  • Analyze technical data and solve problems to address risks and recommend solutions that balance environmental protection and practical feasibility.
  • Manage multiple projects and coordinate input from experts, stakeholders, and Indigenous communities to deliver timely, high-quality approvals.
  • Communicate and build relationships with industry, municipalities, and the public, providing clear guidance and representing the ministry in hearings and meetings.
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
  • You currently have accreditation as a Professional Engineer in a Canadian Province or Territory, and you will obtain a Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) license as a condition of accepting this position.
  • The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid G license or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver's license upon being hired.
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical, chemical, civil, and environmental engineering principles related to air emissions.
  • Ability to evaluate complex engineering designs, specifications, and technologies for compliance with environmental legislation and standards.
  • Proficiency in applied mathematics for atmospheric dispersion and explosion modeling.
Regulatory Knowledge:
  • Ability to interpret and apply ministry policies, guidelines, and national/international engineering codes, provincial and federal environmental legislation (e.g., Environmental Protection Act, Environmental Bill of Rights), regulations, and municipal by-laws to ensure compliance.
  • Skill in preparing legally enforceable Environmental Compliance Approvals and Renewable Energy Approvals.
Analytical and Problem Solving skills:
  • Expertise in reviewing and analyzing complex technical data to assess environmental impact and risk to human health.
  • Ability to identify issues, develop solutions, and make recommendations based on sound engineering judgment.
  • Competence in risk assessment methodologies and decision-making under contentious or ambiguous conditions.
Project Management and Coordination skills:
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent applications/projects, establish timelines, and ensure deliverables meet service standards.
  • Skill in coordinating input from multi-disciplinary experts, stakeholders, and Indigenous communities.
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and performance measures.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement skills:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to prepare technical reports, briefing notes, and present complex information clearly.
  • Ability to negotiate terms and conditions, build consensus among diverse stakeholders, and provide expert testimony in legal proceedings.
  • Political acuity to manage sensitive issues and maintain effective relationships with industry, government, and Indigenous communities.
