Job summary

Sun Life Canada is seeking a Lead AI Engineer to design, develop, deploy, and support enterprise-grade AI/ML and Generative AI solutions on AWS. The role combines strong software engineering with hands-on AWS AI/ML and services to deliver secure, scalable, production-ready applications that drive measurable business value.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 5+ years building and operating solutions on AWS.
• Hands-on experience delivering AI/ML/Generative AI solutions in production environments.
• Strong Python development skills and experience designing, testing, and integrating RESTful APIs and event-driven services.
• Experience with Amazon Bedrock and core AWS services (Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, S3, DynamoDB, RDS/Aurora).
• Experience building RAG solutions (document ingestion, embeddings, retrieval, grounding, evaluation, vector databases).
• Experience developing AI agents or tool-using workflows with orchestration and safe access.
• Knowledge of AWS security, IAM, KMS, logging, monitoring, and incident support.
• Experience with Git-based development, CI/CD, and IaC (Terraform, CDK, CloudFormation).
• Understanding of Docker and containerized deployment (ECS/EKS).
• Strong communication and collaboration skills for stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and operate AI/ML/Generative AI solutions on AWS.
• Build production apps using Bedrock foundation models, including prompt engineering, RAG, tools, agents, and workflow automation.
• Design secure RAG pipelines with ingestion, chunking, embeddings, indexing, retrieval, grounding, evaluation, and governance.
• Engineer agentic solutions with controlled tool access, orchestration, memory, error handling, and human approval points.
• Build scalable serverless and containerized services using Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, EventBridge, and ECS/EKS.
• Implement data/persistence patterns using S3, DynamoDB, Aurora/RDS, and Glue.
• Apply security and governance controls, automated testing, monitoring, and cost controls for AI apps.
• Create CI/CD pipelines and IaC; contribute reusable components and runbooks.
• Produce technical design artifacts and provide post-production support and optimization.
• Collaborate in Agile environments and mentor junior team members.
