Job summary

TC Energy in Calgary, AB, is seeking a Senior Advisor, Media Relations to lead strategic media programs that strengthen the company’s reputation and support business priorities across Canada. You will develop messaging, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and serve as a spokesperson as needed.

The role requires substantial media relations experience, a broad network of contacts, and a deep understanding of the Canadian political and regulatory landscape.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in a related field.
  • Eight to ten, or more years' experience in a media relations, communications or journalism role.
  • Proven experience in media relations, issues and reputation management, crisis communications and project management.
  • Established media contacts and relationships, particularly in national, political, business, trade, energy and regional media.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current affairs, the Canadian political and regulatory systems and policy development.
  • Excellent writing skills and proven experience writing and executing communications and issues management plans.
  • Strong understanding of media landscape and proven ability to secure media coverage.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively across teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute comprehensive media relations plans and strategies that influence, inform and contextualize issues important to TC Energy’s projects, operations and reputation.
  • Identify proactive opportunities to contribute to external conversations and pitch media.
  • Provide strategic communication consultation to business partners and senior leaders to proactively provide media relations communications solutions.
  • Develop and maintain key media relationships, conduct proactive media engagement, secure earned media opportunities across print, digital, broadcast and trade outlets and perform spokesperson duties as required.
  • With a one-team mindset, coordinate and align with the greater communications department —including Business Communications, Government Relations and Policy & Insights— to amplify our voice and position across internal and external channels.
  • Develop a keen understanding of our business and keep a pulse on evolving trends internally and throughout the energy industry and broader business environment.
  • Proactively track, monitor, identify and engage with traditional and new media.
  • Media training, coaching and preparing subject matter experts and executives for media opportunities.
  • Develop messaging, talking points, Q&A, media statements and communications materials to support executive engagements, business priorities and emerging issues.
  • Provide strategic counsel on emerging issues, reputational risks and media opportunities to help shape external positioning.

Our Media Relations team is seeking a Senior Advisor, Media Relations based in Calgary, AB.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Media Relations, this senior-level position involves developing and executing strategic media relations programs that strengthen TC Energy’s reputation, support business priorities and advance proactive storytelling across the Canadian media landscape.

This role is ideal for a strategic media relations professional with spokesperson experience; a belief in the vital role energy plays in our lives; a deep network of political, business and energy media contacts; and a solid understanding of today’s media landscape including the tools, platforms and technologies required to support effective media relations and communications.

What You'll Do

Crisis Communication
  • Support emergency response and crisis management and act as Public Information Officer as required. Occasionally be available for extended work hours outside of standard business hours, call-out support as needed, and participate in our emergency response team and on-call rotation.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Post‑secondary education in a related field.

  • Eight to ten, or more years' experience in a media relations, communications or journalism role.

  • Proven experience in media relations, issues and reputation management, crisis communications and project management.

  • Established media contacts and relationships, particularly in national, political, business, trade, energy and regional media.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current affairs, the Canadian political and regulatory systems and policy development.

  • Excellent writing skills and proven experience writing and executing communications and issues management plans.

  • Strong understanding of media landscape and proven ability to secure media coverage.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively across teams.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working on a media relations team for a public company.

  • Public speaking experience.

  • Digital communications and social media expertise.

  • Understanding of the energy industry and its political environment.

  • Experience translating complex concepts into accessible language.

This position requires candidates to:
  • Travel, with overnight stays away from home. A valid passport is required, for travel to the United States and Mexico.
