Senior Advisor, AI Governance and Security Strategy
The Opportunity

Artificial intelligence (AI) is already at work across the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), and we are building the strategy that keeps that use safe and secure. As our Senior Advisor, AI Governance and Security Strategy, you will owner that strategy: the decision rights, the AI Register, and the operating model that determine how AI is approved and used, and how it is monitored and measured, across the organization. You will shape how we govern a multi-vendor AI estate spanning Microsoft Azure, Foundry, Fabric, Microsoft 365 and Copilot, Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, Workday, and Esri ArcGIS. This is a strategy and advisory role; you define what good looks like and work through the security and data governance teams that own enforcement.

You will join a new Digital Enablement and Artificial Intelligence team whose work reaches the AI Steering Committee and the Executive Leadership Team, so your advice will shape decisions from day one. If you want to build AI governance from the ground up at the regulator responsible for the safe, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of Alberta's energy resources, this is that opportunity.

What your day-to-day will look like:
  • Own the strategy for governing and securing AI at the AER, defining the decision rights, the AI Register, and the supporting processes that frame how AI is approved and used, aligned to recognized frameworks such as ISO/IEC 42001 and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.
  • Define the metrics and processes that monitor and measure AI across the organization, including oversight of models and agents and the data protection and identity signals available from tools such as Microsoft Purview and Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Define the operating model for AI tools, answering who may use a tool, what they may use it for, and where, how, and when they may use it, and establish cost caps and quotas, supported by FinOps processes, that keep AI consumption predictable and tied to value.
  • Maintain a platform-neutral view across the AI estate, advising on which capabilities to adopt, where controls are required, and how to avoid purchasing the same capability twice.
  • Partner with business branches, the training group, and corporate communications to design training and communication that build understanding of AI risks and responsible, ethical use.
  • Contribute to the enterprise AI strategy and roadmap, and report on the organization's AI posture through a quarterly dashboard to the AI Steering Committee and the Executive Leadership Team.
What we're looking for in you:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Business, Public Administration, Environmental Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field. Post-graduate education in AI, data management, or digital transformation is considered an asset.
  • 10+ years of experience in information security, governance, or risk strategy, including experience governing or assuring AI or machine learning systems.
  • Deep knowledge of AI governance and security frameworks, such as ISO/IEC 42001 and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, and the ability to turn them into clear processes and decision rights.
  • Strong command of the controls that monitor and measure AI, including tools such as Microsoft Purview and Microsoft Entra ID, and working knowledge of FinOps consumption controls across multiple vendors.
  • An influence-first working style, with excellent communication skills and the ability to educate the business on responsible AI use while working through the teams that own enforcement.
  • CISSP, CISM, ISO/IEC 42001, IAPP AIGP, or Microsoft security or AI certifications are assets, as is experience in the energy industry or a regulated environment.
Additional Information:

All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

This position will be subject to pre-employment background screening, including a criminal record check.

What we offer you:
