Job summary

Arbutus Medical Inc. is seeking a highly capable Senior Accountant to own the integrity of financial operations, oversee day-to-day accounting, and lead the month-end close in a growing medical device company rooted in Vancouver, Canada.

You’ll collaborate with operations and leadership to maintain strong financial discipline and ensure audit-ready records. The role emphasizes ownership of transactional accounting, AP, payroll, expenses, and partnership with external auditors.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
• CPA designation or near completion preferred.
• Experience in a product-based or manufacturing environment strongly preferred.
• Proven experience in owning the month-end close and full-cycle accounting.
• Direct experience leading or owning the client side of an audit.
• Strong understanding of internal controls, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
• Experience with tools such as Xero, Expensify, Dext, and modern accounting systems.

Responsibilities

• Own and execute the full month-end close process, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
• Lead all balance sheet and key account reconciliations.
• Ensure consistency between sub-ledgers, supporting systems, and financial statements.
• Identify discrepancies, investigate root causes, and implement corrective actions.
• Review and approve all Accounts Payable activity, ensuring proper coding and approvals.
• Oversee payroll review for accuracy and compliance.
• Review employee expense reports for accuracy and policy compliance.
• Ensure Dext and other intake systems are functioning effectively.
• Review POs and ensure alignment with invoices and receipts.
• Validate goods/services have been received prior to payment.
• Strengthen controls across procure-to-pay cycle.
• Own audit preparation from the client side, including documentation, reconciliations, and schedules.
• Ensure all financial records are audit-ready (not just year-end).
• Act as the primary contact for external auditors.
• Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, workflows, and controls.
• Enhance SOPs and ensure systems are optimized and integrated.
