Job summary

Maccaferri is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant based in Cambridge, Ontario. You will manage daily accounting operations, lead month-end and year-end closings, and ensure accurate financial reporting for complex projects.

The role requires strong Excel skills and knowledge of GST/HST filings in Canada. Collaborating with project managers and engineers, you will drive cost control, variance analysis, and internal controls improvements while supporting audits and strategic financial

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting; CPA preferred but not required.
  • 5+ years in corporate or public accounting.
  • GST/HST tax filings experience in Canada.
  • Advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, PivotTables).
  • Experience with SAP accounting software is a strong plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Assist in tax return preparation and timely tax filings.
  • Lead month-end and year-end closing, reconcile GL activity and ensure accurate reporting.
  • Manage treasury activities: bank transactions, cash flow reporting and customer payments.
  • Coordinate with project managers to account for project costs (labour, materials, subcontractors).
  • Perform budget vs. actual variance analysis for cost control and forecasting.
  • Support external audits with necessary documents and resolutions.
  • Maintain cash flow and internal controls to safeguard assets.
  • Develop and document accounting policies and procedures.

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our dynamic team at Maccaferri, a leading civil engineering firm specializing in innovative infrastructure projects. As a Senior Accountant, you will play a key role in managing the company’s financial operations, ensuring accurate reporting, and providing strategic financial insights to support decision‑making and business growth. This position will be based out of our Cambridge, Ontario location.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations, ensuring accuracy and compliance with financial regulations and company policies.
  • Assist in the preparation and filing of tax returns and ensure timely compliance with tax regulations.
  • Lead the month‑end and year‑end closing processes, reconcile account balances and review GL activity ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Assist with daily, weekly and monthly management of bank transactions, cashflow reporting, customer payments and other treasury‑related functions.
  • Coordinate with project managers and engineers to ensure proper accounting for project costs, including labor, materials, and subcontractor expenses.
  • Perform budget vs. actual variance analysis and provide actionable insights to senior management for cost control and financial forecasting.
  • Collaborate with external auditors during annual audits, providing necessary documentation and addressing any discrepancies.
  • Maintain and monitor cash flow, ensuring sufficient funds for ongoing projects and operational expenses.
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls, ensure compliance with accounting principles
  • Collaborate with the Executive Team as well as Operational Leaders on various projects as needed
  • Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial integrity.
  • Evaluate best practices and identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies
  • Manage inventory counts, analyze and resolve actual to book inventory difference.
Education and Experience:
  • Experience with SAP accounting software is a strong plus but not required
  • A bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or related field, CPA preferred but not required
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in corporate or public accounting environment
  • Experience with GST/HST tax filings and other regulatory and compliance matters specific to Canada
  • In-depth understanding of accounting principles, including accruals
  • Advanced Excel skills, including Vlookups and pivot tables to reconcile and analyze reports and large data sets
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a dynamic environment and handle multiple competing priorities
  • Honesty and integrity in all financial practices, ensuring transparency, ethical decision‑making, and adherence to company values and industry standards.
  • Problem solving, attention to detail, project management, organizational and analytical skills required
  • Reliability in meeting deadlines and delivering consistent, high‑quality results while maintaining a strong sense of accountability and ownership in all tasks.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively interact with cross‑functional teams, clients, and stakeholders, ensuring clarity and collaboration.
