Job description
Overview

At Helm Operations, we build the software that keeps the world's maritime operations moving. From tugboats in Vancouver Harbour to offshore service vessels in the North Sea, thousands of fleets run their businesses on Helm CONNECT and we don't take that lightly. But building world-class maritime software doesn't happen by chance. It takes smart strategies, strong partnerships, and sound financial stewardship. That's where you come in. We're looking for a Senior Accountant to join our Finance team and help ensure Helm's continued growth and success. You'll manage complex accounting tasks, maintain compliance with financial regulations, and turn numbers into insights that guide key business decisions. You'll also play a key role in strengthening internal processes, and supporting strategic initiatives that keep Helm scaling strong.

Make your impact with a rapidly growing Marine Software business!

Responsibilities
  • Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements to ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP/IFRS.
  • Lead the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, and variance analyses.
  • Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assets accounting.
  • Oversee regulatory reporting, including tax filings and audits.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.
  • Implement and improve internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to provide financial insights that drive strategic decisions.
  • Mentor and support junior accounting staff, promoting accuracy, learning, and accountability.
  • Lead or assist with special projects such as system implementations, process improvements, and M&A initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA, CA, or CMA designation strongly preferred.
  • 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a senior or supervisory role.
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP/IFRS, tax regulations, and internal controls.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (NetSuite, QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle, or similar) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities.
  • Keen attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, scaling environment.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
