Job summary

Export Development Canada (EDC) is hiring a Sector Researcher to advance Canadian exporter strategies by researching firms, value chains, and ecosystems. You will deliver market analyses, identify opportunities, and translate insights into actionable guidance for international business advisory services.

You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, use advanced analytics, and contribute to sector strategies that support export growth and global supply chains.

Qualifications

  • Completed degree in Economics, Political Science, Business Administration, International Business or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in market research, analysis, or strategy development.
  • Experience in insights and strategy development.
  • Experience in international trade, export development or market intelligence.
  • Strong research and analytical capabilities; ability to synthesize complex information.
  • Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, and AI-enabled research tools.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze market penetration, competition, and market practices; connect to opportunities.

Compensation Details:

  • Sales Enabl. (Strat & Gov.) 16: Salaries typically range from to $74,297 to $99,063 annually, based on qualifications and experiences + a performance-based incentive.
  • Sales Enabl. (Strat & Gov.) 17: Salaries typically range from to $84,698 to $112,931 annually, based on qualifications and experiences+ a performance-based incentive.
  • Sales Enabl. (Strat & Gov.) 18: Salaries typically range from to $96,557 to $128,743 annually, based on qualifications and experiences+ a performance-based incentive.

The salary and grade will be determined based on the skills and experience of the successful candidate.

Location

  • Export Development Canada operates under a hybrid work model, currently requiring employees to work from the office two days per week. Beginning in September 2026, the in-office requirement will increase to three days per week,implemented through a phased approach based on location.
  • This role will be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa.
  • Relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates.

Team Overview

The Sectors and International Advisory (SIA) Team delivers impact to Canadian exporters through advisory, connection to business opportunities internationally and delivery of EDC’s overall prioritized sector strategies.

We have created a new role for the team providing value through research of the Canadian business ecosystem and sectoral insights. In the role of Sector Researcher, you will leverage your wide-ranging research and analytical skills combined with your extensive knowledge of Canadian sector/sub-sector ecosystems, business and global supply chains to develop and share practical industry sector strategies and Canadian trade ecosystems analysis.

This role requires a seasoned professional who is energized by experimentation and is driven by innovation. You also take a collaborative approach to problem solving, including but not limited to finding better ways to target opportunities for Canadian exporters to connect into international supply chains. This role will report to the Director of International Business Advisory Services.

What you will be doing:

  • Conducts research into firms and industry value chains and ecosystems and shares insights to determine potential areas of focus
  • Responsible for performing critical analysis and prepares recommendations in the areas of market penetration, competitive analysis and market practices relative to domestic and global trends while actively connecting the dots to market opportunities to drive business choice making
  • Keeps current on Canadian innovation ecosystems, technologies and gathers market intelligence in specified sectors of expertise to augment and maintain key relevant industry sector strategies
  • Deploys analytical techniques to data such as qualitative and quantitative market surveys, historical and projected business results, and advises through detailed reports and presentations
  • Strengthens the voice of Canadian companies and connects their solutions to the business needs of EDC’s international business networks
  • Transforms data and market intelligence and develops actionable insights for the team that support prioritization and choice making
  • Leads projects and collaborates with other multidisciplinary subject matter experts to create and establish sector strategies in order to develop and share intelligence on Canada’s trade ecosystem
  • Responsible for turning this market research and insights into innovative ideas and actionable business opportunities.

What we are looking for:

  • Completed degree in Economics, Political Science, Business Administration, International Business or in a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in market research, analysis, business strategy development, or related experience (the level and scope of responsibilities will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience).
  • Demonstrated work-related experience in insights and strategy development.
  • Experience in international trade, export development, market intelligence, or related fields, with an understanding of how companies internationalize and assess export opportunities.
  • Demonstrated strategic research and consulting-style analytical capabilities, including the ability to structure ambiguous problems, synthesize complex information, and develop decision-useful insights.
  • Strong analytical and research execution skills, including primary and secondary research, company profiling, data organization, synthesis, and development of executive-ready outputs.
  • Experience using commercial research and intelligence platforms, including tools commonly used for trade analysis, market and industry intelligence, and specialized sector analysis.
  • In depth knowledge of Canadian exporter’s sector/sub-sector ecosystems and international supply chains.
  • Advanced knowledge of economic and/or political analysis principles and practices.
  • Experience in using firm level (micro) data sets.
  • Excellent proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, and AI-enabled research tools like Copilot.
  • Strong written, presentation and spoken communication skills in English with the ability. to communicate effectively and influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to present ideas in a clear, concise and organized manner.

What will make you stand out:

  • Bilingual in both official languages (French and English).
  • Experience with data visualization software (i.e. Power BI, Tableau) to represent complex data sets communicating key insights to non-expert audiences.
  • Experience in financial analysis preferred, including interpreting financial statements, evaluating company performance, assessing industry financial trends, and integrating financial insights with market and sector research to support strategic decision-making.
  • Experience in one or more strategic sector preferred: Agri-Food, Advanced Manufacturing, Digital Industries, Defence & Security, Energy & Energy Transition, Critical Minerals.
