Job summary

Bay Ferries Limited seeks a Second Mate Officer to serve as the vessel's Safety Officer and to oversee the safekeeping of navigational watch aboard the Fundy Rose, operating between Saint John, NB and Digby, NS. You will maintain bridge equipment and ensure safe, organized operations on deck and in the wheelhouse.

The role requires certificates, strong communication, and leadership to supervise crew and coordinate embarkation of passengers and vehicles while upholding a strict safety culture.

Qualifications

  • Must hold Canadian Watchkeeping Mate and Near Coastal COE.
  • Continued Proficiency Endorsement required.
  • Seafarers Medical Certificate valid for sea service.
  • Radio Operator Certificate required.
  • STCW Basic Safety, Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, Advanced Fire Fighting certificates.
  • Continuous Certificate of Discharge (Discharge Book).
  • Specialized Passenger Safety Management endorsement or certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Directly responsible for care and upkeep of lifesaving and firefighting equipment; inspection bi-weekly.
  • Be familiar with firefighting equipment, alarms, safety gear, anchors, mooring gear, and Safety Management System.
  • Ensure compliance with emergency operation of machinery and equipment on ships.
  • Maintain wheelhouse equipment, charts, records, nautical publications, compasses, and navigational aids.
  • Safeguard ship, equipment, and stores from improper use by passengers or crew.
  • Have authority over watch personnel and supervise embarkation/ disembarkation of passengers and vehicles.
  • Coordinate duties of crew members and report defects or shortages to Master.
  • Demonstrate commitment to just-cause safety culture.
